I just got this drive like a few weeks ago and sometimes theres a loud clanking sound coming from it and things freeze up. I'm using winxp pro. Athlon1.0 K7S5A (SiS735) if that helps. And I used Active Smart and the values don't look too good for a new drive. Is my drive a dud?

They're fine. SMART is almost entirely useless, anyway. What you should be concerned about is the clank and freeze. Describe the sound, events leading to it, what type of free you're encountering, and what you do to resolve the problem.
 
well sometimes when i'm playing a game or just randomly it'll make this "clank" sound like a metalic click sound you hear sometimes on startup. I think maybe its because I uh have one drive sitting ontop of the other because those are the only bays it fits in. Just random freezes really. No real events occuring up to it. I"ve scanned for spyware and viruses i have none. I was thinking maybe its the power cable leading to the hard drive and i swapped it for another and plugged the PSU into another slot on the power bar and haven't seen anything funny yet. I think i should get a bay cooler but my PSU is some POS Deer 300watt that came with my 25dollar case. Anyway heres another strange thing

The freeze is always preceeded by the clank noise? The noise is roughly the same each time? Do you power down afterwords or just hard-reset?
 
Well the freeze is usually preceeded by the clank sound yes. Sometimes it makes the clank sound and it doesn't freeze. I was playing midnight club II and it kept clanking away for a bit but didn't freeze (Strange because swap file is on OTHER drive) Yes the noise is roughly the same each time. And if I reset it seems to not detect properly in bios sometimes. (well both drives so maybe the mobo is acting funny for drive detection) anyway after power off power on it boots up again. its running pretty hot like at 50C sometimes should I get drive cooling?

The clank noise is bad news, on WD's it usually means the controller is going flakey or the drive has experienced a critical problem and has to reset itself. Run WD's diagnostics and RMA it if it fails them.
 
I would RMA it. Had a similar thing happen with a Deskstar drive a long time ago and it never corrected itself. But you are asking for trouble putting it right on top of another drive. 7200 RPM drives create more heat than you think and could have damaged it.
 
I have other place to put it because they dont fit in the other drive slots. But for the WD diagnostics it says its not having a problem. Now that the drive is the only device on the 12V dplug chain it hasn't made any of those clank sounds. I would RMA it but to RMA it the dealer i brought it from they have to "test" it first. What if they just say "its fine" and give it back.
 
same problem with my WD 40GB SE

I had been using it for more then a year and then it suddenly developed this problem: It would sound like it was powering up and then it would lock up. it got progressively worse and worse until I RMA'd it. Sadly, they sent me a recertified drive with the exact same problem (so I RMA'd again)
 
Recertified? like refurbed? how can you tell if its recertified or not does it say? I hope they dont send me a recertified one because i just bought the damm thing.

not really sure what it meant, but just above the serial # it said recertified
