hi, this is ny first time on hardforums. i have a microstar, inc. nvidia 8800gt that has been in my rig for about a year now. i am a heavy gamer, having played GRID and Crysis on max settings as well as other games, never oc'ing the graphics card at all. then i played prototype and it was all jumpity and glitchy, with white squares popping up or the game just crashing randomly. i thought it was my gfx card so i rolled up the core from stock 600 to 650. i figured this would be okay if i kept an eye on it and stress-tested it first. so i set it plus 50 and as soon as i applied, the screen blacked out except that i could see my cursor and some white swaures. it blinked a couple times and then i got bluescreened. so now that card is artifacting even on the desktop and im thinking i need a new card (duh). do you think i can get the warranty to cover it? i have a nice case with good temps (19 celsius on the CPU at idle, 27 at load) and i never oc'd the video card before. should i do that or just not even bother fighting with them? also, is it worth it to get a 9800gt for a little more, and what companies do you recommend?

Well first of all if you are on air those temps are lies, if you are on water they are still lies, if you run a chiller then they are possible (unless of course you live in a freezer). Second MSI I doubt warranties a product that has been overclocked (not like they will know). Third have you tried adjusting the clock speeds back to default and increasing the fan speed to 100%?

lol buddy, they are definitely not lies. i went in with a high-quality foodservice thermometer and it said the same thing. i have a total of 6 fans in the whole rig, no water and definitely no nitrogen (which would totally rock).

also, i did set it back to 600 initially but it got so bad that i actually clocked it down to 550 so i could at least type emails. i didn't overclock it at all previously but it still was acting funky, i just didnt know it was mildly artifacting at the time (cuz i didnt know what the hell artifacting was). lol i actually mistook the artifacting for an underpowered system, so i thought setting the clock a tad higher would help, lol. normally i wouldn't even think about overclocking a gpu but my friend copied my rig and he oc'd it to 750 just fine for the last 6 months. actually i think he put in a bigger harddrive but that wouldnt matter.

you didnt mention what cpu or hs/f you are using, or if you are overclocking or not. but your idle temp is below room temp. also, i dont know how you could possibly measure cpu temps with a thermometer.
anyway, check the fan on your vid card, for it to be artifacing at default it has to be overheating. if the fan is ok, well then go here and start an rma

http://support.msi.com/

your card might be out of warranty, or you might need a receipt or invoice. you wont be fighting with them. your card is broken, you want an rma. simple as that. if it turns out you have to buy a new card, do not buy a 9800gt, which is probably a renamed 8800gt anyway. post how much that you want to spend and i am sure someone can help you. i havent been keeping up with nvidia cards for the last year or 2.

Well the first problem is that the 8800gt and gts seem to not start pumping the fan until it gets to 100C (mine does quite regularly). I just set it to 100% by default and it's good otherwise it idles at 78C and goes past 100C at load.
