Anandtech has a great set of benchmarks that you can download HERE .

Just follow the instructions and run the City 17 timedemo, which is the todays equivelant of Quake 2's crusher timedemo (hope some of you remember that :D

Anyways, HOLY CRAP, HL2 is totally CPU dependant, on my not-so shoddy AMD 64 3200+ rig, a lowly 9700 PRO is beating the crap out of my 6800GT.. I get 65FPS in 1280*1024, no AA, triliniar... Unbelievable how the AMD 4000 that Anandtech tested with had such a higher result, even with a 9700 PRO. At 1024*768 it performs a few frames slower than a x800XT..

It seems like a CPU upgrade may be a better option for people that want to squeeze some extra FPS out of the game. Results

Lets start testing. Turn off AA and AF, set everything to high and reflect all and lets see the results:
As for me: 65.02 FPS, ran the test twice, 2nd result was the highest.

Results are lot higher on that benchmark, probably because of the indoor activity before going outside.

possibly, i have the flashlight turned on though, which according to Anand adds per pixel lighting to everything, so it should be GPU dependent

you can also try the Canals 09 demo, that one is intense shader wise

hey guys i ran the demo but i can't seem to find the results.... and after the demo.. it don't show what my fps was.. weird.

I'm getting strange results with Hard and AT C17_12 demos.

I get the nearly the same results at 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1600x1200. Results are nearly the same when I use AA and AF and when I do not as well.

Demo 1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200
Hard_c17_12 61 fps 59.7 fps 58.7 fps
AT_c17_12 50 fps 49.3 fps 48.4 fps

The above are at 8XAF 4XAA. Running without AA/AF the difference was less than 1 fps at 1280x1024 and 1600x1200.

Very odd. It looks like I'm CPU bound but I figured my Mobile at 2500 MHz would run better. I would think that my scores would be higher. I think there is something else going on with my machine. System in sig. Any comments? I'm running the 67.02 drivers.

Something else I noticed with demos is that reflections (windows, floors, etc.) are pink. Anyone else with this problem? I do not have this problem playing game it is only when playing demos.

edit:typo

FlipCody, yes, the game is very CPU bound. To see any differences you really have to stick with 1600x1200 and NoAA/2XAA/4XAA as comparisons. Even at 1600x1200 4XAA/16XAF in some situtions its cpu dependent, just the way it is unless you have a really really fast CPU like an FX-53 or better.

As for the pink, after you make a change of resolution, AA or AF exit the game, then restart it, no pink.

it should bring you back to the console where it shows the FPS

Thanks for replying Brent.

I still thought that I would get better numbers than I am. Bumrush does have a Newcastle and I only a Barton but I'm running my Barton 200 MHz faster than his. Anyone out there with a Barton and a 6800gt at Ultra speeds that could run these timedemos?

Thanks!

I did some bench's on all of the AT demos as well as the shorter [H] demos posted by Brent. All bench's were done at 1280x960 with 4xAA and 16xAF and vsych was disabled. I have a A64 3200+ (newcastle 754) with 1 GB PC3200 RAM and a GF6800LE @ 425/1125.

at_canals_08 71.3
at_c17_12 53.6
hard_c17_12 65.3
hard_canals_09 55.1
at_coast_05 84.8
at_coast_12 73.3

Also, I noticed something odd when I first benched with vsych on. My max would be 75 as normal, but my min never dropped below 37-38. So, the max seems to go to the refresh rates as usual but the min only drops to exactly half of the refresh rate. Also, the min when I benched the same level with vsych off was in the mid 50's. So, playing with vsych off definitely raises your min FPS. Just a note I thought was interesting.

Edit: Forgot to mention this is with 5.1 hardware sound with an Audigy 2 ZS. I wasn't sure how to turn off sound. Anybody have that command line?
