Tone defeat (tone bypass) all the way. sorry, could'nt help it. 
Ok, in all serious'ness, with my Audigy 2 ZS and Beyerdynamic DT990pro headphones, I really don't need to adjust any software/hardware equalizer's.
If ANYTHING, I will just tone my bass down a tad bit, because the DT990pro's are a little bass heavy.
A long time ago, in the days of my 2.1 Altec Lansing (now 7 years old) and Turtle Beach Montegobay 2, I used to customize the software graphic equalizer. Mids were about equal, treble up slightly and bass down considerably.
As you can see, I don't need a one toned thumping bass to enjoy music, and used to like the mids/highs to be a little more pernounced and closer sounding.

dont use the equalizer to push anything beyond the mid mark "0", otherwise it sounds like crap

No equalization in the player, none with the Audigy software, and none also in the Onkyo receiver.
However, during late night listening, I tone down the bass a little so as not to create an intrusive noise when everyone is asleep..
