Post your DREAM computer!!

I'd like to see that AGP card put in a PCIe slot, hehe.
My ultimate system would be FX55, some SLI NF4 board, 2x BFG 6800 Ultra PCIe (if they have 'em), a couple gigs of corsair, 2 raptors, phasechange cooling (on CPU, NB, and GPU, why not? its ultimate right :D ), PCP&C 510 SLI PSU, and some case... thats all. oh, maybe some optical drives too, those come in handy sometimes

EDIT, oh I forgot about monitors, how about a few 2001fp's or whatever. as for the Audio, I'd get some soundcard, whatever... um... a sunfire ultimate reciever, and the latest klipsch Reference series speakers with 4 RSW-15's, heh.

A8N SLI
FX 55
2 WD RAPTOR (1 FOR SYSTEM, 2 FOR PAGE FILE AND OTHER STUFF)
2 VANTEC VORTEX HD COOLERS
6 400GB HD
6 3.5" WATER COOLING COOLERS
2 6800 ULTRA
2 WATER COOLING PUMPS AND RESERVOIRS (ONE FOR HD, ONE FOR EVERYTHING ELSE)
DANGER DEN EVERYTHING ELSE
TWO OCZ POWERSTREAM 600 PSU
THAT HUGE LIAN LI CASE
4GB RAM
PLEXTOR DVD DRIVE
PLEXTOR PX716A DVD WRITER
20.1" SCREEN WITH 16ms RESPONSE TIME

P4 3.6/8
Intel Board
1GB RAM
1 36GB Raptor for boot drive
1 400GB SATA drive for data
4 Dell 2005FPW's

Just off the top of my head.

Original poster: Why did you choose ECC ram for a board that doesnt support it? Do you know how to configure a system?

mine:

FX-55
2 gigs of G.Skill GBLE
a 74 gig raptor
meeeh. i guess a 6800 ultra.
DFI's S939 when it comes out
Any old generic case

The A8N-SLI Deluxe has 8 SATA ports, plus 2 IDE. If one wanted to use external optical drives, one could put 12 hard drives on it, 8 SATA plus 4 PATA. :D

Tyan K8WEX (S2895)
2x Opteron 250 (or 252, if available)
4x 512MB OCZ PC3500 ECC, 2 per CPU
4x Raptor74, RAID10 for OS
8-Port RAID controller with H/W engine, 32MB Cache (Raptor RAID)
16x 7K500 HD, RAID5 for files
16-Port RAID controller with H/W XOR, 512MB Cache (7K500 RAID)
2x GeForce6800Ultra, SLI
OR
Custom-built VGA, using cluster of X850s (probably at least 4)
2x 243T (or replacement)
1x Qualia-004 projector
Logitech Z5500
Audigy2ZS Platinum Pro (Dammit, I always forget sound!)
Cooler Master Wave Master
2x 16x DL DVD+/-RW (NEC, probably- I don't like Plextor)

2 x Opteron 250
Tyan Thunder K8W Chipset Dual-Cpu Motherboard
16gb or Corsair ECC Registered Memory (8gb per CPU)
24 x Sata 300gb HDD running through 2 x 64bit 3ware SATA RAID Controller running Raid 0+5
SuperMicro Rackmount Server Chassis (with Hot-Swap PSUs)
2 x Optic Fibre NICs + 2 x 1gbit Ethernet ports (onboard)
Floppy drive :)
DVD+CDR/W slim drive
UPS

No idea what i'd use it for, probably just telehouse it and run a business of it haha.

I'd have said an 8 x 850 opteron server but their a tad expensive, each chip is like $1000US at least :p

If you want realisitc then i'd say an Apple G5 Dual 2.5ghz Tower with 24inch Apple Display

Why not? I'm running 12 of them. There are hundreds of servers that run 100S of drives

LianLi Makes a case [the v2000 and v2100] that has 12 hidden 3.5" bays, + 7 visible 5.25" bays..

Does it have to be with parts I can afford?

If not.. then here goes

4 x opteron 250
16 gb registered pc3500 [it exists, folks, just very expensive]
36 x seagate 400gb sata drives in raid 5.
3 x 3ware 9500S-12 cards with 1gb ecc cache each
4 x wd raptor 74s in raid 0 [as swap file drive only]
8 x ST373454LW [15k rpm, 73 gb single platter] in raid 1+0 as a boot drive
1 x adaptec 2230
a non existant motherboard that has 4 x pci-x slots
2 x pci-e x 16 slots
2 x pci 32 bit slots
a 1000w+1000w+1000w 3way redundant psu that can hold all this
a case that can hold all this.
2 x ati fireGl v7100's in the pci-e x 16 slots
1 x http://www.9xmedia.com/Images/CONFIGURATIONS - COLOR/2 over 2.jpg with the 23.1" option.
2 x pioneer 109D's
The keyboard I have now
a larger wacom intuos2 tablet than my 6x8

common misconception..

While opterons definately benefit from ECC.. it's not what they require

they require REGISTERED memory, which is NOT the same as ECC

You're system wouldn't even BOOT

Dual 30" Apple Monitors
SLI Nvidia 4400 (they are out in a month) (they both have 512mb ram, so that is 1gb video ram)
Dual Opteron 250
Tyan SLI mobo (was at CES)
16gb ram pc3200 eec ram
2 15k scusi hd. (one for system, one for page file and other stuff)
25 400gb Hard Drives (10tb)
All water cooled.
Two OCZ Powerstream 600w HD (One for CPU, MOBO, GPUS etc.) (One for 10tb array)
Would get two Lian-Li PC V2100 Black Aluminium Full-Tower
Saw of the right side of one and the left side of the other and weld together.
Gut the inside of one, and create a huge Hard Drive rack on one side, and on the other 2 water cooling pumps and reservoirs and radiators for water cooling the entire system.
The DVDr, DVD Rom, Floppy Drive.

fuck that give me a quad operton mobo with sli and 2 6800 ultra extreme editions on pashe change cooling with an ass load of raptors and id be happy

Can you find any OCZ PC3500 ECC that isn't registered? I'll save you the trouble of running a search...

#2- OCZ PC-3500 ECC Registered Dual Channel DDR
While I am sure you know more about servers than me, I still suggest cross-checking your information in the future; I try to do this whenever possible to avoid putting my foot in my mouth.
Also, I'm sure you are aware that Athlon64-FX (the 940-pin variant) is almost identical to Opterons. Their memory requirements, for example, are the same.
OCZ PC-3500 ECC Registered Dual Channel memory has been designed and engineered to take full advantage of the AMD Athlon 64-FX platform.

OCZ fully validates each PC-3500 ECC Registered EL DDR Dual Channel memory kit on the Asus SK8N mainboard to ensure maximum stability and performance.

If you own an AMD Athlon 64-FX system and want the absolute best in performance and stability, look no further than OCZ PC-3500 ECC Registered EL DDR memory.

* This product has been specifically designed for use on the AMD Athlon64 FX platform and should not be used on any other desktop platform. AMD Athlon XP and Intel Pentium 4 users should not purchase this memory for use on their systems.

The man (YOU) SAID

"OCZ PC3500 ECC"

You did not Type "OCZ PC3500 REGISTERED ECC"

As I never buy OCZ products, I did not look to see if Y)OU made a mistake between ECC and REGISTERED.

Not only am I aware of that, but it is my cause for contention that the only truly fundamental difference between opterons and fx's is a cache change, an smp change, and the lack of a 940th pin on the 939 models

..

Shall we agree that we both jumped to conclusions on this one, and share the blame? As you said, most people don't understand the difference between ECC & registered; I didn't want to create any confusion, so I listed the more commonly recognized feature- my fault for omitting the other aspect. However, I am well aware of the more stringent demands of a server-class processor.

Overall, I am still quite satisfied with my choice of components. Do you agree that it is an otherwise respectable parts list?

in workstation performance, is quad any better than dual proc, or does that ony make a difference in server apps?

my dream computer:

AMD64 FX-55
4 x Crucial Ballistix pc4000

Yes, it's very good.. - I'd opt for corsair's part, but that's just me.

No, it makes a difference in any app that can support it.

Maya, for example, is not a 'server' app

There is a diminishing rate of return, mind you

If 1 processor runs maya at a baseline of 100
2 might give you 180pts

3 might give you 240

4 might get you 300 [numbers could be even lower]

but you get the idea..

But we aren't talking about $ logic.. We are talking about dream computers for rich fellows who like to waste $

4 processors are better than 2.. 2 are better than 1

Converseley, 4 processors are better than 1.. Just not "everywhere"

Farcry doesn't care..

Unfortunately....

No such board exists like I want it

(2 x pci-e 16, 4 x pci-x, 2 x pci, 4 x opteron)

THe best "useable" board out there in my opinion is the s2885

1 x agp 8x
4 x pci-x
1 x pci
2 x opteron
8 x dimm slots

The s2895 is nice with it's dual pci-e-16 slots, but it's not "out" yet.

2 x pci-e-16
1 x pci
3 x pci-x

So..
I'd have to limit myself to only 2 3ware cards (making it 24 x 400gb sata seagates in raid 5)
and 1 adaptec card
and probably have to limit myself to 16gb of pc3*2*00 ram (8x2gb registereds)

http://2cpu.co.kr/zboard/zboard.php?id=2DEX&no=111

Nice picture collection of that board

fucking drool
how much would this cost? (estimate)

FX-55
Asus A8N-SLI
Dual 6800Ultra BFG
2 74 Gig Raptors
2gigs of PC3200 OCZ El Platinum Revision 2
Chenming Dragon Case (Dunno I just love that case)
PCP&C 510 SL
Some sound card, audigy 2? I don't know sound cards.
The best surround speakers money can buy.
The 23 or 24 inch Samsung Monitor from Newegg, (its like 2 grand or so)
Liquid Nitrogen Cooling on my cpu.
And a nec 3520A drive.

I leave anything out? Oh and a really comftorable chair!

EnderW said:

Well

The opterons themselves : $3400
The memory : ~$7000
The seagates? : ~$14000
The 3wares : ~$3000 [with the memory in that #]
The raptors : $680
The Scsi's? ~ $3500
Adaptec card ~ $600
if a motherboard like I wanted existed, I'd say ~2000 for it.
another $1200 or so for that PSU
~$800 for a case
$1600 for the video cards
$20,000 for the monitor
$200 for the pioneers
$300 for the larger wacom

So, around 60 grand considering I'd want a decent UPS for it, too

Now.. a system that I could actually justifiy? I already put that together.. it's only $17K

what use would you put it to to justify 17k???

as for my "dream" hardware, dual opty 252's w/ 4gb ram and 2 6800u's in SLI. refrigerated water cooled. raid 5 of 5x 400gb hitachis, cuase i dont need anymore ATM(or for a good long while), with 2x 74gb raptors in raid 1 for boot. dual nec 3500a's, cuase they're awesome drives, pc p&c 510 express.

oh, and dual 21" LCD's

Heavy video editing. Massive data storage. 3d Rendering at a decent pace. Large display setup

2 x Samsung 243t's is in and of itself $4,000
1 quadro fx can be ~1500

Also, read my thread in the data storage forum.. I'd say you'd be smarter getting 5x400gb seagates than 5x400gb hitachis

Hitachi = No advanced RMA's, Difficult to get a hold of tech support dept, 3 year warranty
Seagate = Advanced RMA's, easy to contact tech support dept, 5 year warranty

40% more warranty, and 50% faster rma time for 10% more seems worthwhile to me.

yes i will agree that seagates would be better

for what end? ie, what do you do for a living?

My friend and I actually priced one out on Newegg a while back. It came out to $7000. Dual Opertons, 6800 Ultra, over 1 TB in RAID 5 in 300 GB HDs, a controller card for said HDs, 2 Plextor DVD writers, 4 or 8 GB of RAM (depends on the mobo we ended up with). I suppose now you'd have to go back, do dual Xeons with dual 6800 Ultras.

Maybe the stuff I mentioned it's going to be for?

I'm not saying I have this rig that would be 17k, what I meant by "i built it already" was I've already put the 'quote' together..

The system in my sig is my best personal rig.. I haven't even gone 64 bit yet, for my personal machine

well, the things you mentioned, editing video and graphic work can be used in different fields, like games, movies, graphic design, ect, just knowing that youre editing video and doing high power graphics work doesnt tell what you are doing it for.... im not trying to be an asshole or anything, i was just curoius; that is one hell of a system you justified, and it would be pretty cool if you were a pixar artist or something :D

i know, i checked out your sig when you said that, i figured you just had it on a waiting or "wish i could have this" list, ive priced out many systems that there is no way in hell i could afford :p
