I noticed when Hard revised the forums, they removed the post counter - I thought this was a pretty cool move as many people just like to spam to watch that # grow - just wondering if Hard admins had that specific reason in mind when leaving that in the public profile

That was exactly the reason it was not included when we did the revision. Too many members were thinking that they were their postcount and that equalled knowledge on any subject. Conversely the opposite was thought to be true...low postcount means no knowledge, so to end the pissing contests, the postcount was dropped. As a side benefit, the meaningless posts have also dropped since there is no prominent visual record of how many posts you have.

maybe there's no more visual postcount (exept in profile) but the Title under your name is still pretty much part of the "pissing contest" tho

That fact was taken into consideration and many variations were discussed, but in the end it all came down to the same thinking as you mentioned. Without outright deletion of user titles (which no one wanted to do) they were left in pretty much as they were. The moderators are more alert to the facts of title bashing and take the appropriate actions and as Barney Fife would describe it "nip it in the bud"
