I stumbled on this site which has all the rebranded model of a laptop (ie M680x). Apparently Medion also has a product based on this laptop, and had released a bios update. The dude on the site used the bios to update his emachines m6805, and nothing broke afterward. So, anyone want to take the risk for me go ahead. ;)

WUSS!!! :D

It won't bork your laptop. I just tried it and it works fine. I used WinPhlash420. I don't know what it did if anything but it works.

I did notice one change it keeps shutting off my wifi card after a reboot.

If someone whats to lend me two sticks of PC3200 I'll check it out. :D

i have an emachines m5310 and ive been using the medion bioses for a while now. they work flawlessly, and have improved hard drive performance a noticable amount for me.

I got 2 sticks of OCZ PC3200 last night and I am right here in Manchvegas. I installed one and it fired right up with the stock 256mb PC2700. I got part way thru taking apart the lappy but I need better directions than just looking at the pics.

I can let you use my OCZ to run some tests and hopefully get something going for us if you can install that second sodimm in my laptop. :D

Sound like a plan. I'll help you out if you want. They are easy enought to take apart. I sent mine in for warranty once and E-machines didn't notice I took it apart.

Oooooooh I wanna hear how that turns out, do you guys think we could have dual channel ?

You can't have dual channel on a single channel controler :-p. You won't see dual channel in a laptop because power consumption would be increased from the extra signaling and space on the chip.

Oh, when I do the install of the 512MB even if it doesn't work I'll take pictures and do a HOW-TO so everyone can enjoy 1024MB goodness. I'm also going to pull the card reader to see if that helps at all with battery life.

I have heard Chicken or Coward, but I sure am ain't no WUSS!
Anyway, I flashed with the new bios and this fixes a few problems for me. I hope someone out there have a stick or two of PC3200 to test out this new bios.

Kingofl337, just change one of the bios option to leave the wifi card on.

what problems does it fix?

Just a few minor inconvieniences.

1. I like to put the laptop in stand by mode. Sometimes when I used the Fn key or through the Start menu, the laptop would go into stand by mode but it would wake up immediately. So I have to do it again for it to work. One time I put the laptop in my backpack too soon and the thing heated up like hell. Lucky nothing malfunction.

2. I use the TV-out to watch movie. If I put the laptop in stand by mode then the Fn key to toggle different display scheme won't work. I have to do a restart

3. Once in a while the audio device is gone as in the sound card is not present. I have to shutdown the laptop completely and then turn on again to get the audio back.

The above problems are solved for me. Beside that I don't know what else does the bios enhanced.

did you do any benchmarking/overclocking with the new bios versus the old bios, i know ehn i upgraded to a new bios on my m5310 i noticed increases in hdd and cpu speed using sisoft. i know that the m53xx and 68xx are 2 very different laptops but its possible to that it increased performance

WIFI Problem - I noticed that after I commented on it. Thanks :)

I'm trying to hook up with Luxolex to test the PC3200. I'll report back as soon as I do.

Buddy... there is dual on laptops... I have it...
Dell Inspiron 9100... also look at the Dell XPS.. it has it too.

I think if you check the white sheets. Intel mobile chipsets don't support dual channel. Just because your laptop has two banks doesn't mean its running in dual channel. Also, we are talking about a real CPU the Athlon 64 which has an intergrated memory controler. The socket 754 doesn't support dual channel and you won't see a socket 939-CPU from AMD in a laptop.

That Dell of yours enjoying a 533FSB? All Intel Mobile parts are either 400 or 533 FSB.

Then explain to me why it's a prescott core?
Would you like a screenshot? Also it has hyperthreading.
I'll show you!!

This question was refering to the M680x. And I know that it only has single channel. I found this out from Gentoo.org website. I don't know about Dell or Intel chip though.

Just decided to try this BIOS and it seems to work fine. I haven't really tested anything for changes but I do know that it won't hose your machine. Well it didn't hose mine. Just thought you might want to know.

those fatass desktop replacements use desktop chips (HT, 800mhz fsb). Even some laptop makes use i865 mobo's in their laptops, so they have dual channel memory controllers in those laptops, like the sager 8790's.

Yes I'd like to know that to, please cut to the chase !
Kingofl337 pleaaaaaaaaaaaase test those memory modules !

Who got told?

Prescott != dual channel.

HT != Dual channel.

Now, you ~might~ have a mobo that has dual channel, but the cpu/core does not matter at all UNLESS you're running AMD-64.

Hello, I am the nut running the site that started this post. Anyway, AFAIK all S754 Athlon 64s are single channel there is no way a BIOS can change that, as they are physically missing 185 pins. Remember, the Athlon 64 has an on-cpu memory controller.

BTW I updated my site with a new BIOS today. It is older than the Medion BIOS but seems to fix more things. I ripped it from a recently purchased M6809. It fixed some of my issues in Linux and added a full-screen "e" logo  .

If you run into any other BIOSes out there (really itching to try a Voodoo 860 one) please e-mail me.

Thanks

Vip2, thanks for keeping us updating and making that site for us! I'm going to update my M6807 with the M6809 BIOS soon. Gluck on getting that Voodoo 860 BIOS!

Updated to the M6809 BIOS and it works well. I can finally install FC2 x86-64 without using any kernel options. Anyone try the M6811 BIOS yet?

I did update mine soon after I had posted before and everything went smoothly. For those thinking about doing it you've got nothing to worry about because it works great!
