Possibly getting MacBook Pro..

I'm thinking of switching to a Mac laptop *OMG!*, specifically the MacBook Pro.
The reason for this is I'm going into college, and I just figure it would be smarter to leave the majority of my work on a Mac instead of a PC. You can argue stability with me, but thats not my issue.

The MacBook pro I'm looking at is the 15.4 inch one with the 2.16ghz Core Duo processor, 1gb RAM, and an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 w/ 256mb of memory.

First, is the whole 'run windows on mac' thing true? Is it stable?
I ask because the whole reason I'm thinking of getting a MacBook Pro (instead of a cheaper and better looking black MacBook) is the graphics card situation - if Windows ran well on the Pro, I would love to be able to switch over to windows when I want and play some games..

So the second question is, assuming the answer to the first is 'Yes', would I be able to play games such as Half-Life 2 (ex. Gmod9)?

I bought my black macbook with bootcamp in mind as well but just today I reset my hdd to remove the windows partition because well, i don't need it. if I wanted to game I have plenty of games i can use on my mac, halo, cod2, wow, etc.. i'm fine with those.

go for it. I love my MBP, and run both bootcamp and parallels totally stable. I've used mine in college and it totally stands up to the challenge.

You can play those games on a Macbook?

The only thing you'll need to take into consideration when comparing the MacBook Pro to other laptops with the "same" videocard (X1600) for gaming is that the MacBook Pro isn't really designed to run the X1600 properly - it is underclocked from the normal 475Mhz to 310MHz, with the memory underclocked from 470Mhz to 278Mhz. Under OS X you can't do anything about this (the fact that it's overclocked is hidden from the user), but if you install Windows you'll be able to see the underclocking and correct it to the real X1600 specs - which causes the fans in the MacBook Pro to run full tilt after a few minutes, making it much louder then you would normally be able to get a MacBook Pro to go under normal conditions (I have not seen any reports of overheating/crashes with the clockspeeds restored, so I assume it's safe).

Whether you can either live with a "X1600" that performs like a fast X1300, or live with a MacBook that sounds like a jet, is up to you.

I'm fine with full fans when I'm in windows playing games. I don't plan on playing games that much, I just want the option to.

Oh, and I just won a Macbook pro off of ebay for $1650. I'm happy. :-P

At lower detail yes, and this macbook isn't for that, if I wanted to play them it'd be to shoot something before putting it to sleep next to my bed, not to seriously game on it. Any game that is updated to universal binary runs pretty well.
