Possible trouble with PSU

I started a thread over in the MOBO section trying to diagnose what's wrong with my PC. Pretty sure it's the power supply. Anyway, today I decided to crack it open and see if I could find any damaged components, especially caps. Didn't find anything obvious, but I did find this one corner of the PCB that looks like it's been peeled up. Not sure how or why, but it makes me question the integrity/quality of the board. Anyone ever see anything like this and do you think it's what's causing my boot issue? Or could it be an indication of some damage somewhere else? Here are some pictures of the damage including a picture of the label on the PSU.

Also, I did not remove the board from the casing, only removed the cover, so the damage was already there.

i have the same problem with my ocz stealthxstream i took it apart did some test with an amp meter as best i could and nothing everything seems to work no bad caps nothing burnt absolutly nothing.........

Well, this one is an older model. Probably about 5 or 6 years old, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's pretty much dead. It did a good job for a pretty long time, I guess. Much longer than the other PSUs I tried, which were cheap to begin with.

i dont like making too many new threads so im going to ask a question thats sorta related to this, if/when a psu goes out what are the chances that it takes a component with it?

Too many variables.

If a PSU goes out due to external forces (such as a lightning strike) then a better quality PSU is more likely to protect other components, but sufficient external forces may force their way past the PSU regardless of their quality.

If a PSU goes out due to defective construction, it depends on which parts go out and how.

so a refurbished psu it will go out because of "defective construction" and definately take a component with it?

No. It might or might not go out just like any other PSU. A refurbished PSU has been returned to the vendor for reasons unknown to you, which may have nothing to do with its quality or reliability.

No. As I said, if it goes out, it depends on which parts go out and how. It is not possible to predict whether or not a PSU going out will take a component out without knowing how the PSU goes out.

While I'm here, I might as we'll ask what a good recommendation for a moderately priced PSU would be to power my rig. It's older components. Asus P6T Deluxe, i7 920, XFX Radeon 4870 1GB, 6GB Patriot 1333 ram 3x2GB (can't remember the exact model) and an old Samsung 500GB 7200 RPM HD (can't remember the model). I did some moderate over clocking before with this old power supply and the stock cooler with no problems, but I may not do anything this time around. Don't have a lot of $ to spend at the moment.

You simply get a prepaid card, just like all the ones you get in the store that have $20 on them. You can spend it on anything, anywhere that takes credit cards. Yup, if you don't want to deal with the rebate paperwork, then it's on amazon for $70, or you get the Corsair CX 430M on amazon for $51.71 which should also be enough for your system, but I'd rather get 600W and do a little paperwork.

I looked around on slickdeals.net but didn't see any PSU deals that were much better, but I didn't look too hard.

That's not too bad then. The mail in stuff is just a pain to deal with and usually takes way longer than its worth. I agree with you about the wattage. Was hoping to stay at or above 750 but I just can't afford it. Looks like 600 or 650 is going to be about right for me.

i think the TX is the better series. the CX is just for the average builder joe who isnt hard up on psu's but its still good if your playign with a budget. i bought the TX over the CX last week

Awesome. I think I'll go with the TX then. Was looking at a CX600 or a TX650 for around the same money. Sounds like the TX is going to be worth the little extra.

just a warning it has a whole bunch of cables.........almost too many to fit in my mid tower, bottom mount psu with a radeon 7950 double d in the lower pci slot and the hdd in there also...... crazy

That silencer there that I was running was about the same way. Just way too many cables for my needs. Ended up begging able to tuck most of them away under the HDD caddy, though. Hopefully I can do the same with this one.

And sorry for all the typos. It's so hard to type on this phone without making a bunch of mistakes.

The CX600M is modular, so you only have the cables you need in the PC case.

I'd love to get a modular PSU, but my budget won't allow. Did think about just making a regular PSU modular. I've seen it done and I'm capable enough to pull it off.

I see the deal that I linked to for the CX600M earlier in the thread is over now, and it's $60 after rebate instead of $45. Too bad. Well, the deal has shifted to the CX500M being $40 after rebate. 500W is plenty for any single-GPU video card build.
