Hey [H]

So I have a little problem. For Christmas I ordered some custom sweatshirts for a couple of my friends but the images I was using didnt come out as I hoped.

Is it possible to take a low resolution picture and edit it to a higher resolution?

Forgive my noobness :(

I am willing to compensate anyone for their time (wouldn't be much as I am on a college student budget) :/

I will PM images to anyone willing to give it a try.

Thanks [H]ard

zoom in and enhance. if it doesn't come out clear enough the first time, just enhance again.

I'm fairly certain that this is sarcasm...

The long story short is: no, you cannot increase resolution.

The long story long is: technically you can make any resolution image, any other resolution of image via any number of photo editing tools. However this increase in resolution will have no effect as an increase in resolution will do nothing to increase the amount of 'data' in the image. In other words, it is literally impossible for any program to 'guess' what data was supposed to go into an image.

The 'enhance' joke comes from TV shows like CSI in which they somehow 'enhance' a photo and then the photo immediately becomes clear... which is impossible. It's an inaccuracy that drives tech people nuts.

You can use some smart sharpening skills on the lower resolution image so it prints well when enlarged. Up to a point.

Also, if the picture is line art or clipart or clean graphics, there are methods to enlarge those cleanly as long as they are not uber small.

Shoot me a PM with a link to the best file you have, and a description of how large (inches) you would want to print it and I can take a look. Don't host the file on one of those services that further compresses it - I can give you my email if needed.

I made a request thread earlier here is the link to that with the images.

They arent very popular images so trying to find a higher resolution for them is pretty much impossible :(

I wish I had better imaging skills I could give it a try but its all a foreign language to me.

One of the images is so small I think its going to have to be redesigned (the little character)

If the image was cartoonish, you can probably edit it yourself if it isn't too complex. Other than that, you can probably pepper it with some effects to mask the low resolution. Scanlines maybe?

no you cant, if you scale it bigger and bigger youll lose your pixelation and the image will be all grainy, it depends if its line work or not can try illustrator or a program that traces the image and make it to a vector or rasterize it?...

Actually, you can, but you will lose data. It won't become grainy - if anything, it'll give the impression of being blurred due to pixels being interpolated.

If you're really interested in super-sampling images, you might wish to give the following a read:

Yeah MN Scout has helped me out a lot with these images. He has some mad skills. Currently trying to find a shop that can print DTG in my area but so far nothing local.

This will actually be possible to some extent soon. Check out 4:40 into the video.

Maybe for CS6.

It's essentially using complex new algorithms to paint new parts to the image that look to the human eye like they belong.

Actually watch the whole video and you can see that it can unblur motion blur from a photo, it can turn blurry text from a camera phone image into readable text. And it can increase the detail and resolution of a low-quality image.
