Plan on ordering a system from Aberdeen to be used as an ESXi server for a bunch of techs.

The system is going to based off of their Stonehaven A269 series with the following

1 x SuperA+Server 2022G-URF 2U Opteron DP 6100
2 x AMD Opteron X8 6128 2GHz/16MB/80W
8 x 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC w/Thermal Sensor
8 x 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC w/Thermal Sensor
1 x LSI LSI00198 SAS9260-8I INT RAID 6GB SAS/SATA PCIE 2.0 512M
1 x LSI Logic BBU07 Battery Backup Module
8 x SEAGATE ST3500514NS 500GB CONSTELLATION ES 32MB SATA DRIVE

From what I can tell the barebones is on the VMware HCL along with the disk controller but I just want some input on if I would run into any issues with this setup.

Again is going to be used for techs supporting the software our company makes so break neck speed is not required but will need to support about 40 virtual machines with about 2 GB of RAM each.

That looks like a fine system. Though you might want to consider a more network cards for that many VM's.

Any particular reason using Aberdeen? Last quote I got from them was higher than almost any other vendor I had, even vendors where I had them "match" the 5 year warranty.

Also: Please view my thread about 'lack' of management for the 9260-8I cards with ESXi 4.1 below.

The above system was quoted to just about 5K which I was unable to get anywhere else.

A similar dell config always was 5500 or above

Oh I have no doubt Aberdeen is cheaper than Dell. :) I'm talking about other supermicro builders. :)

Who else did you look at as I had a hell of time of finding people who build and warranty a server on the VMware HCL
