Possible problem with my UPS

I just picked up this Belkin UPS at the store a few days ago:

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProd...t_Id=&Section_Id=76&pcount=&Product_Id=171906

I had this problem with the previous Belkin unit as well (that I returned
to get this one), not sure what is going on. I charged the UPS for 24+ hours, so
that shouldn't have been a problem.

I am plugging my 21" CRT and my Dell 8400 Desktop Computer into the UPS, nothing else. When I leave my computer, I always turn the monitor off. With them both connected to the UPS, whenever I turn off the monitor, the computer keeps running. However, if I ever turn the monitor back on, all of a sudden the computer AND the monitor shut down instantly, like they ran out of power all of a sudden. The UPS is still plugged into the wall, and it is not running on battery power. The UPS log shows me nothing, like it didn't even happen.

Any idea what is going on? Thanks!

Cheaper UPS's can't differentiate high in-rush from something large like a 21" monitor (probably half of the load on that battery) and an overload.

ug... sorry to say you got ripped off. It's only $55 directly from belkin (using the coupon code: 12345, I shit you not)

$130 for a 750VA power supply doesn't really make it high end. I didn't say it was crap. I just said it was cheaper. I'm just assuming it doesn't have the circuitry the more expensive units have.

First, maybe we should see if it's even enough juice to support your hardware. Do this: Got the UPS monitoring software installed? Fire it up and watch it while you unplug the battery from the wall. After you do this, how far does the battery drop? If it drops below 50 or 60%, you need a bigger and/or better battery or the UPS is just plain defective.

Roomate in college had a similiar problem with his Belkin. He tried hooking up to my setup :D no problems. So we hung it from the fence on the cow pasture and shot it with a Winchester Model 12 Heavy Duck Gun. Now the UPS won't even turn on :p

This thing is $130 or so, plus Belkin makes pretty good stuff...

its a run of the mill MOV based SPS
not "pretty good stuff" just a highly thought of brandname
nonlinear loads and inrush comes to mind like johnnyguru points out

Well, thanks for all the help. Sucks that I just wasted the cash though. Oh well. I'll see if I can return it and get an APC. :D Thanks

personally Id look at Powerware and Liebert ;)

(likely used on ebay)

I have two Liebert units I purchased used. Both are better then any APC I have ever owned. Nice "mission critical" products.

the liebert ebay'd sounds good. however i purchased a belkin from newegg a month or so ago for around $155.00 tax and shipping included but it was the 1200va rated one....you got jipped bro. :(
