I am a network admin and have several computers at my disposal. Some are Xeon 3ghz servers and some are desktops. I probably have about 40-50 ghz to add. I have a few questions for you guys.

Do any of you do folding on servers at work? Servers that actually do things for your business like a web server or DB server or something? If so what are your results? Does folding cause ANY, even the slightest, difference/loss in performance?

I think this cause is great and I am willing to do my part but I cannot have any loss of performance on my production servers. Now if there is performance loss, has anyone put folding on a schedule? So I can fold during off hours when the traffic is very low on my servers?

My opinion is folding on workstations is fine. Folding on production servers, I tend to shy away from it, simply so there can NOT be any blame on Folding if something does go wrong.

FAH tends to lend itself well to workstations. You can run it on a server in a perfect world since it gives up resources as needed but the client is not perfect. We have also seen certain WU's in the past that are mis-assigned or are memory hogs. This does not bode well in a production environment. If uptime and speed is a priority, I would not install it on production servers, just workstations.

As far as running it on the servers during non-peak times, you could setup tasks and such as on the newer version of windows, it runs as a service.

./edit

You could try a production server at 75% and see how it goes...

On any machine, the Folding@Home client is very good about only running when no other processes are waiting on the CPU. As with any piece of software, though, bugs occasionally happen, so it's a bit of a risk on a production server (low probability, high consequence).

but if you put rayman2k2, the aussie monster wont come out of your closet and kill you

I set up the folding console client as a service on our office server,
and set it to run at 50%. So far, so good for about 6 months. No
noticable changes in performance and a few ppd.:)
