Possible Machine ID Conflict?

Hey guys,

I moved my 8800GTS over to my dad's house in order to cut down on heat in my system..

My question is this...his only client (gpu2) has a machine ID of 2...it has completed 12 WU's averaging ~3K PPD...

My system has SMP (Machine ID 1) and a gpu2 client with a MI of 2....

I am wondering if both the gpu clients having the same MI is a problem? I didn't think so since they were in separate systems..I am averaging between 18-19K PPD in my system and with the 3K PPD in his I should be getting roughly 21-22K PPD...

I've been checking my stats on Hard Folding, and it says I've only been turning in like 14K PPD average...what gives?

Machine IDs need to be unique among all the clients in a system regardless of the type of WUs they fold. The only exception is any client in a VM because it is in effect a different 'system'.

Apollo,

I do understand that they need to be unique if they are located in the same physical machine...What I was asking referred to the card that is located in my Dad's machine which is 65 miles away;)...

Machine IDs are tied to user IDs. Every client needs a different machine ID for each system's user ID. Moving hardware from one system to another (have done it countless times throughout my farm) shouldn't affect things since machine IDs are not in any way associated with the hardware that's running. It's purely for client differentiation.

To answer your question in the OP, no it shouldn't make a difference because the two clients running in that machine have different MIDs. Why the production may be less than expected I do not know, and can only offer possible reasons. Maybe the clients have been receiving less productive WUs from Stanford lately, or perhaps there are a lot of EUEs in that system. Another possibility is the system is not seeing its full potential. There could be low frequencies or a SMP/GPU interference (affinity, priority, etc...)

Also, forgot to mention that if there are multiple GPU clients in a system, you need to add the proper flags in the shortcut to assign each client to a different GPU. If you don't add the different flags, you will not see all the GPUs operating. This is different from a MID, though.

Machine IDs are completely local to the machine the clients are running on. They are only used to allow multiple clients on the same machine. It doesn't matter if you use the same machine ID for clients on two different PCs, since they are entirely local.

To put this into an example, you can have two clients running on one machine with IDs of 1 and 2, and on another machine you can have two clients also running with IDs of 1 and 2 and there will be no conflicts. As long as you are not using the same machine ID for multiple clients on the same machine, you're fine.

Forgot to thank everyone for the help...I still can't seem to understand why [H]ardFolding reports I'm only averaging ~15K PPD..

I think PPD is determined based on the last 7 days. So for you right now it's 109315/7= 15616.
