I just recently purchased an E8500. It came with a half height heat sink. I didn't plan on overclocking and with the trouble I've had with the chip, I don't think I'll be able to.

Anyways.

With stock everything, I'm managing 55c idle and 74c load with CoreTemp (RealTemp indicates 10degrees less respectively)... The fan for the CPU is about 1800-2400 RPM. It seems to change settings because of the Abit smart fan control setting, but its constantly revving up and slowing down.

This is driving me bonkers. I believe the temps are too high and the fan is going nuts at all times. Does this sound right to anybody else? Or is that pretty much standard operation?

I've tried about 10 different methods of thermal grease, and I've even lapped the CPU, and I've seen very little results. I've checked Real Temp sensor check and it reads 4-5ish which is normal there.

I'm going nearly bonkers with this CPU. My E6600 is about 35c idle and 55c load. This is consistantly 20c hotter with 45nm vs the 65nm E6600. I'm thinking after market heatsink, but I don't even think thats the issue.
 
RealTemp uses the correct TjMax for your E8500 which is 95C and not 105C.

Reported Temps = TjMax - Digital Thermal Sensor Data

You can see that the wrong TjMax automatically boosts your reported temps by 10C.

That means your idle temp is 45C which really isn't too high depending on your room temperature and case air flow. The OEM heatsink is barely adequate junk. It's OK if you don't do any overclocking but I wouldn't use it on my processor.

Read the RealTemp docs and you will learn that some of these 45nm processors report idle temps that are too high even when you're using the correct TjMax. My E8400 reads about 5C to 8C too high at idle depending on load and room temperature. Do the calibration test and that should help you learn more about your sensors. When not calibrated you can't make any direct comparisons between your 65nm E6600 that typically reported temps that were lower than the actual temperature to a 45nm E8500 that often times reports temperatures that are higher than the actual temperature.
