Possible dying hard drive

I could use some advise. :p
I have a old Dell xps t600 that I had used to store old emails.
I tried to boot it and I got the following message.

<windows root>\system32 ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt.
Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

I tried to boot it up and use recovery console but it said that it could not detect any hard drives in the system.
I did have a slave drive in the computer at the time and moved it to another computer and it works fine.

I checked the bios and there were no hard drives listed.

I looked on the web and it said that possible causes could be:
hard drive going bad
cables bad
keyboard shorting out.

The drive makes a nice constant clicking noise.

I have never had a hard drive die on me so I am not sure if the hd is dying and I would like to get a couple things off it.

Can I change the settings on it to a slave drive and put it in another machine?

Would appreciate any advise on what would be best to do since I dont want to try things and have it die on me before I can transfer some stuff off of it.
