Ok well, it seems that my geforce 6600gt with my 2gb ram and a64 3400+ cannot play the game smoothly on medium settings.. So I have to play on low which is kinda gay, so i am wondering, should I upgrade to a geforce 6800Ultra, or an X850XTPE? I want this game to urn perfect, and I am working now so when I get my paycheck I could get a video card.. But I also have some restarting problems with my Aspire 500 Watt PSU... Do you think this card will run cooler or a lot hotter and cause my pc to restart more, even though the BSOD mentions drivers, it seems like I have enough powerful amps and watts.. Etc.. What do you think would be best? I am pretty sure my psu is good, but tell me your ideas!
 
Wait for the 7800GTX to come out, and then decide. Prices are gonna plummet once it comes out.

If you plan on sticking with your AGP motherboard, I'd top it out with an X850XT, and keep that until you move to PCI-X. If you have PCI-X, find the 7800-equivilant of the 6800GT (something that has the same number of vertex shaders and pipes, etc.) and overclock the shit out of it.

I'm sticking with my DFI 250GB for a little while longer, so I plan on swapping out my 6800GT for an X850XT around the end of June.
 
I have a 6800GT with a system similar to yours and I play on high settings.

The only difference I see is that I have an Intel 2.4C @ 3.4ghz and 1GB of Mushkin PC3500 LvL II Black @ 2-2-2-5.

I'm not sure if a X850XT PE or Ultra is really needed for the demo.

Now, the retail version...that's a whole other story and nobody really knows for sure, especially with the "supposed" increase in graphics options over the demo.

You could always just wait for the GTX to be released on the 22nd, IIRC. That's probably what I would do.
 
Yes I will wait for that to come out, then I would probably get a 6800Ultra, cuz bf2 is nvidia based or something.. idk!!

Will ati prices plummet too? I am leaning toward ati, because they just run games better.. for instance, hl2 and bf2 are running great with ati!!

Heh, I wouldn't say they are spoken wisely, I'm just in a similar boat, I don't have the cash to do a full upgrade right now (gotta put new rims and tires on my car), and the performance difference in my current system (DFI Lanparty UT 250gb, Newcastle 3000 (1.8 overclocked to 2.4), 1GB OCZ EL Rev2) compared to what I would get if I put out $1000 for a new mobo, cpu, and vid card just wouldn't be worth it.

If I can wait till the end of June, put out $300 for an AGP X850XT, and keep my system for another 3-5 months, I'd be set.

And I want to see some Crossfire benchmarks before I buy a new mobo anyways.

Basically it'd be really stupid to spend money right now on any major parts.

I would think so, as there would be a product out there that is superior to the X850XT for $500, you wouldn't keep prices on the X850XT at $500, unless you don't like selling parts.

Of course, until the GTX comes out and we see prices for it, this is all pure speculation.
 
I am just gonna wait til the end of june, maybe early or late july, depending on a 15 years old's salary, and when I get paid, I will get the Ati Radeon X850XTPE ..

nice review.... I guess they are about even.... x850xtPE vs 6800 ultra.... but the x850xtPE gets a slight edge b/c of it being a refreshed card from teh x800xt...so I guess performance isn't too shabby for my ultra.... since I saw some review site yesterday that the x800XL was killing the 6800gt..... :confused: but I really want to see a review of the 512mb cards and how much difference they make

They should have an impact. Using the High texture setting maxes out my 1GB of system RAM and I'm assuming the 256MB on board is maxed too.

Ahhh, those were the days, being broke as hell and scraping every cent I could for upgrades to my PC...

/still broke as hell at 22 with car repairs, mobile home payment, lot rent, car insurance, phone bill, cable bill, internet bill, etc...

Correction its PCI-e

PCI-x replaces PCI and not AGP
 
find out what's wrong with your system. I play smooth with medium settings on a 2.6c, 1024mb ram, 9600xt

what you really should do is chuck that power supply for another one.

Maybe if I upgrade my BIOS? I dunno..
 
are you running cool n quiet ?

how are the rails on your PSU/ and your temps for cpu/video/motherboard?

have you ran Memtest86, and do benchmarks like 3dmark, aquamark etc run fine?
 
7800 will be announced on the 21st w/ some availability on the 22nd.

i would wait for it and either buy it or then buy a possibly cheaper 6800.
 
Yeah, when I can find a 6800nu (new) 256mb, 256bit fron say eVGA, Ledtek, or another strictly reference (pcb) design for around $200 or less, I'll get one. I already have an nVidia one from a Dell, and need a mate for it for SLI in my gaming computer.
 
OP: you definately need to find out what's causing your probs. I have a friend that has a P4 3Ghz, 1gb ram, and a cheesy FX5500 that can run it fine on low settings at 800x600...I'd think that 6600gt could at LEAST play it at 1024x768 medium.

check the other things mentioned...and I don't remember if it was said or not...but maybe refresh your installation of directx or do a fresh install of windows. something else is your bottleneck making you run low settings and not that card...especially if a fx5500 can run it at low settings just fine...
 
Mine runs smooth enough on 1152x864 with a mix of high and medium settings.

I think that youre PSU might be the problem that you're running into issues like that, and if your 6600GT runs hot, then a 6800Ultra will run extremly hot. I think you should check out your PSU before you get a new card, especially if you're thinking of upgrading to a 6800Ultra.
 
My pos Aspire 500w that I have in my AXP with a 6800nu runs everything fine. The gfx card runs about 40*C idle.
 
My psu doesn't even run bad.. I am just saying, everything actually runs cool, my cpu runs at 48F, my case temp is 75-80 C .. it is not a heat issue, it is my video card, is it possibl for a power supply to bottleneck a video card?

Yeah, my pc restarts sometimes but it says on the BSOD something with drivers.. Well, so maybe it is nvidia drivers overlapping and shit, so maybe if I get the ati x850xtpe, will everyhtinfg still run good?!
 
don't even try to install ATI drivers over NVIDIA drivers. I went through that nightmare when I upgraded from a GF2GTS to a 9600xt. I tried driver cleaner and everything including manually deleting the files from a bootable winpe disk and removing the registry entries...the only thing that cleared the problems up was a clean install of windows.

I'd still suggest a clean windows install. If you haven't done it in a while, it's a good idea regardless. XP may be more stable than the other windows versions, but it still slows down over time.
 
The smart strategy is to wait, but don't count on "plummeting" prices of the 6800GT or 6800 ultra. They are already $100 off their original prices and Nvidia can deal the 7800 for $500-600 knowing these three facts.
1) Money is not an issue to the enthusiast, which is the only ones who have a need for this much power with the current games on the market.
2) We have no competition at the ultra high end anymore, at least for a month.
3) E-tailers will price gouge it even if Nvidia doesn't on their end...
 
Uhhh...you can't run at medium settings with that setup? At what resolution, 2048x1536/8xAA/16xAF? Seriously, I've got the same system just with a 3200+, and only a gig of RAM, and I run 16x12 2xAA 16xAF with no problems at all. I don't think an upgrade is what's going to fix your problem...
 
I am running low settings with 800X600 .. No wait, I just though of something, well, my card used to run EVERYTHING fine until my pc like crashed and I did a huge upgrade, 3 months later I built my own pc, it is running etc.. But my card was sitting on my desk for 3 months, probably got all dusty, etc.. So that is the only reason I can come up with, my card is not good anymore... My card ran better with my old Amd xp 2600+ and 512 ram, now it runs like shit with my 2gb and amd 64 3400+ .. I have the money anyways, come late july, I will get a new car.. I am thinking of Ati Radeon X850XTPE.
 
I'm running my sig system, and everything is either Medium or High at 1280x9-something (The messed up 1280x1024 res)

I get probably around 30fps in most places (lower if it's 10+ people in one spot)

So something is obviously wrong software side, because your hardware trumps mine.
 
mine runs perfect at all medium on a radeon 9500 np softmodded to 9700 non overclocked with athlon xp 3200 and 1gb of ram. this is at 1280x960
