Possibility?

Is it possible to damage a motherboard in such a way where video cards won't work in them anymore?

I think I might have accomplished (dunno if thats the right word or not ;) ) this...

I was dorkin around with my secondary rig testing different PSU and it wouldn't turn on... I noticed that I didn't have the 20pin connector seated properly. I pushed it in all the way and started it up this time the fans and disk came on, but there was a wierd smell

I reset a few times to no avail. I tried another PSU that has been tested in another rig and nothing... I hooked up the monitor to my main machine to make sure that wasn't the prob and everything is A-OK.

I took out the 9800pro agp thinking I might have accidentally killed it... I put in a PCI 9200SE and it still gives me a blank screen even...

Is my motherboard not capable of running vid cards? What do you think?

does your board have an auxilary 4pin connector?

Yes and it is connected (actually I am 100% certain it was connected with the other PSU I was testing as well)

Wierd smells (i.e. the smell of frying PCB) is never a good sign. Look closely for blackness around all resistors and capacitors. It's possible that mobo is fried. Does it even try to POST or is black screen all you get? If not the mobo, fried AGP port or 9800 Pro, maybe? :( Although since you tried a PCI card to no avail, one has to wonder if the mobo has indeed kicked the bucket.

Yeah thats kinda what I was thinking... But hoping wasn't true... Luckily I didn't do it to my newest rig.

And I am definately not seeing anything... the monitor just stays in it's sleep state (led orange not green)

Was that smell like a burning smell? If so, you might have fried it.

It's been my estimation that any time you are working with electricity and you have a "funny smell"...you've fried something. End of discussion. :(

By the way, always unplug the rig and de static your self before fucking around inside

I agree and I do, except maybe... Uhh... Well...

The PSU was plugged in (after I hooked up the 20pin and aux connectors) except I didn't uplug the psu from the outlet when I pushed the 20pin connect in all the way...

Trail of crumbs indicates you shorted the board
