Portable RAID without PSU or software solution?

I like some more reliability against hard drive failure. Having thought about it an external portable RAID drive with 2x2.5" sata drives would be really useful.

Unfortunately all the hardware solutions I can find require an external power supply. From experience I know that lugging round a power supply really isn't appropriate for my situation. Did I miss anything?

I thought a good alternative could be just having 2 USB drives taped together and doing the rest in software. I can't see that working very well either. It's really useful to be able to plug into other laptops, media centres etc.
Do you think it could work well to have part of the drives setup in software RAID for important stuff and a section left as normal, probably just NTFS for movies and stuff that doesn't matter? I'd then have the RAID stuff as a .exe on that NTFS drive and that would have to be a cross platform solution.

Alternatively, perhaps I should get a SSD on the basis that this is more reliable and just not worry?
 
Go SSD. Really nice to not worry if you drop your hard drive. I carry a 120gb around with me to and from work biking everyday with my macbook pro, never worry about going over bumpy roads or anything.
