portable hard drive?

I need a hard drive for my digital camera for when i go on vacation so i can transfer the pictures from the camera to the hard drive.
do they make compact external hard drives. or will i be stuck with a full sized external?

well assuming that you are using a latop or some form of a computer then yea they make smaller little 2.5" hard drive enclosures that are very small and very easy to take along with you.
I don't see how you are going to get the pictures onto the hard drive though unless you have some form of a computer in between the camera and the hard drive though.
 
I like the Western Digital Passport. compact, 80gigs and doesnt need a seperate power adapter.. :)

well this is for my father. he travels about 2-3X a year and i want to get him something he can use so he does not need to take his laptop with him every time.
do they make something like this?
 
you could always just get your dad some extra and bigger memory sticks/cards, whatever he uses on his digital camera.
 
I just picked one of these up at Fry's for that exact purpose. I will also use it to xfer Vids to my PSP and to view my diving shots during the trip:

That thing is $400. All he needs is a 2.5" mobile laptop drive and a small 2.5" enclosure and make sure the enclosure has an external power source and isn't USB powered. Laptop drives are very small and are built to take alot more shock then a 3.5" desktop drive.
 
IIRC he needed card reading as well...I haven't seen any plain laptop enclosures that have a card reader built on with rechargeable capability.

I relate ipods to intel. why? because intel is only still turning in a profit because of its advertising. u look at almost every intel product and then look at the amd competition and u say wow, intel sucks. its the same way with ipods. All u see when u watch tv, walk down a block in a big city or step into ur local bestbuy or circuit is ipod, ipod, ipod. The stores barely keep any good competion for ipod in stock. All these people u see who have one, want one or is getting one is bought in by the marketing hype. I almost feel sorry for them. There is so muchbetter players out there (ok maybe only a couple) but still, there are better ones.

Another note to touch on, whenever i go to like say the circuitcity website, they list mp3 players and then the Ipods, under seperate catagories, WTF!!! Hello, the ipod IS an mp3 player. And why the hell does ipod deserve a seperate catagory. :mad:

Another note, the battery replacement. Before, when ur ipod battery started to suck, too bad for u. Now u have to buy a whole new Ipod. Now u can get ur battery replaced. FOR A 100 BUCKS!! Jesus christ, Apple is really raking in the dough arent they? I just replaced my Iriver battery for $15 and it was pretty straightforward. Now i realize that the general public wont know how to replace the battery, but still. Isn't the Ipod big on being user friendly? If they were, they could have made a real simple battery replacement found on cell phones. Real stupid on Apple's part.

I don't know about u, but i like being unique. Thats way i have a ford ranger that i beat the crap out of, and thats why i have an Iriver. I dont want to be classified as being part of a craze that has a grip on the world, and has a following of tens of million. There are sooo many people that i know that has an Ipod, then they see mine and are like WOW, what is that? And i just laugh and say "something that is much better than an Ipod"

I love my iRiver H10-5GB also, I bought it when the iPod Minis were really becoming popular with the misinformed, and well, I don't regret it one bit. For the same price, I got something that can do so much more (FM tuner, JPEG viewer, text viewer, voice/FM recorder, portable HDD on demand, the list goes on), and the best part is that it isn't an APPLE product, meaning, I didn't jump on the bandwagon. I know for a fact that I got a better product for the price, and if others aren't willing to see that, then that's their own fault.

People need to do a little research before splurging on stuff sometimes, you'll often find something better for the same price, if not less.

Intel does have very good marketing but even though their current desktop lineup leaves alot to be desired they dont suck. Intel's Centrino technology is still the best option for laptops which now control around half of the PCs being sold in the world today. The Pentium M processors offer slightly better performance and lower power consumption then AMDs still competitive Turion based mobile processors. When Intel released their socket 478 Northwood processor back a few years ago Intel was on top at that point in the desktop performance realm because AMD's XP 3200+ couldn't keep up with the 3.0C+ Northwoods in most applications, especially the ones that were optimized for SSE2. The 2.4C has gone down as being one of the best overclocking processors of all time. Intel is getting ready for some big CPU launches next year with Yonah, Conroe, Merom, ect. Intels market spectrum is also much larger then AMDs. Intel also has their own chipsets which have long been known for their stability whereas AMD's chipsets have never been much to speak of. Intel as a corporation has its hands in most everything nowadays and they have the large OEM market cornered. AMD has done very well as of late with their Athlon 64 and X2 processors but only time will tell if they are capable of maintaining that progress for years to come. In this industry you never know when one large mistake could lead the whole company to being bought out by someone else. There have been rumors of Intel buying out AMD in the past and something like that could easily happen if AMD fudged on a big release since they dont have the funds to throw around that Intel does. I think Intel could of pushed AMD out of the market a long time ago if they really wanted to but what has kept them from it is because Intel needs AMD. If AMD went under then Intel would become one large monopoly which would be split up and that would equate to the loss of millions.

On the topic of Ipods though i think i'll leave that up to someone else because they dont really interest me ither :D.

exactly what i mean, my h320 is awesome, i love it so much. I can do so much with it and at the time, ipods closest competitor was the Photo. Needless to say, at $400, it sucked sooo much. I bought mine for a little over $280 and have never looked back.

yes, i should have put in that the current intel mobile processors are better than amd's. Also when i said that intels current procs suck, i really meant that they werent as good as amd's procs. Also i think amd will be alive for a while to come. In the past year, they went from barely being heard really outside of the enthusiasts market to really being a contender w/ intel. When u go to bestbuy or circuitcity now, look at the computers. A good share of them are amd, it wasnt like that a year ago.I guess we will have to wait and see who comes out on top when the new procs come out in ~half a year. :D
