Portable Hard Drive question

Alrighty, Im rather a MAC n00b, so bare with me, but i would like to make a portable hard drive that works on both MAC and PC. Nothing too fancy or huge, 80 gig is plenty. So an 80 gig in an external enclousure either USB2 or firewire...however, the mac has the little firewire connector on the powerbook...dunno if that matters....anywho, if someone could recommend a nice hard drive/enclousure combo that will work with both mac and PC...so i can load stuff on it with a PC and drag the files over to a mac powerbook. I dunno if its possible given the different file systems or whatever, but im sure theres someone out there who knows. Anywho, recomendations please.

Not sure about Mac, but I have one that a laptop hard drive fits in that I regularly use to transfer files between Linux & Windows. I had to format it in Windows as FAT32, which is what you may have to do. I just got mine for approx $6 on eBay. Seems to work fine. Aluminum case, surrounds the drive, and all it is then is a USB cable and an adapter to fit the drive. I had the extra laptop drive laying around. I know, however, that they have similar 3.5 enclosures.
 
Any enclosure you choose will work as long as whatever external interface it has, you have on both computers. As far as the enclosure goes, aside from that, get whatever you want. For formatting, if you want to use it on both computers, the above poster is correct, you'll need to format it as FAT32 on a windows machine before you connect it to a Mac. Once it has been formatted properly, both machines will be able to see and write to it. Just make sure that you put file extensions on all your mac files, so they work on the PC w/o having to guess at what it is before opening.

::edit:: Rereading your post, you'lll want to get an enclosure with a firewire/IEEE1394 interface (since that PB doesn't support USB 2.0) and the ability (at least) to hook up an external power supply to it. You can power a notebook drive off of a 6 pin firewire port, but not a 4 pin (that's what the other 2 pins do). You'll also want to get a 4 to 6 pin firewire cable, if the enclosure doesn't come with one already.

Check CC, WD 80 gig complete 69.99 after rebates. Hard to build one for that ;)
