Portable Hard Drive Problem

I have a 30gb Portable hard drive that just plugs straight into the computer via a usb port and plays. But today for some reason wont appear in my computer. It says that it is connected in device manager and also comes up in the safely remove hardware box.
I think maby i should reformat it then try plugging it in again but have forgotten how to reformat drivers if they don't appear in my computer.
Help Appreciated
