Portable gaming

I am looking for a portable gaming system, obviously the main ones on the market are PSP & Nintendo DS.

Well what are the major/minor differences between them?
Some of my main concerns are, battery life, game variety, size (bulky/awkward), hazards?

Also are there any other major portable gaming machines out there? Probably not, but just wondering.

Also, are any new portable gaming units going to be produced in the near future. Say before 2008?

Thanks.

Atari Lynx > * I still have a working one with 15 games.

But recent systems ? the PSP is more a portable entertainment device with longer load times. The DS takes a hit in graphics but over all is a great portable GAMING handheld with a wide variety of games.

For just gaming I'd recommend the DS, if not the Lynx ;)

I prefer the DS and actually have my ps on sale in the For Sale Section ( shameless plug ) In all seriousness, the psp is a great system. The graphics are on par with the PS2, you can browse the internet and do so much more. The only downfall is that good game have been slow to come out. The DS is pure innovative fun, but for a experience to similiar consoles, the psp is the way to go

I don't own a DS but I do own PSP. Yes the load time suck (unless you haxor) Sony has been hinting at the fact that they might start moving games onto a stick anyway.

The games on the psp are great. Lots of great titles from the ps2 made it onto the psp. There is no shortage of games. I got over 12 games now from mostly ebay with the exception of gta. The PSP has great multimedia capabilities and when it comes to playing movies and listening to music the battery seems to last forever. Its also built like a brick its very sturdy and durable.

That is another question I just remebered, thank you also for all of your input.

The movie playback, how is the overall quality versus a generic DVD portable player? Screen size aside, any major problems? Can you watch a full length movie on one battery life?

Thanks.

I have watched a few UMD's on my psp but never all of the way through. From what i remember the pic quality was excellent. I watched steam boy and some action movie. Screen is real nice for movies and the viewing angle is rather large and glare free. Would be great for trips expecially when you can rip your own dvd's to a memory stick and take them on the go.

A lot of good games for PSP just came out (GTA Vice City Stories!). Video playback is very good (though UMD movies are overpriced). I just convert my own videos when needed. The PSP should easily handle playing a 2 hour movie from mem stick, not sure about UMD (I would think so though). I suggest getting a 2.71 or below firmware so you can downgrade to v1.5 and enjoy countless homebrew apps/games.

The DS is also a very good choice. Haven't touched mine in months but I used it a good amount. It is cheaper, longer batt life, no load times. Games are pretty much the same price as PSP games ($35 for DS, $40 for PSP), some PSP games are $50 though.

Both systems are nicely built and stylish (if you get the new ds lite). Can't go wrong with either imo.

What games do you think you'd like for the PSP and DS?

What about the GP2X?

I have a PSP, but I think that in order for the PSP to be worth it you need to use all of its features. I use it to watch video's, it is my MP3 player, I store pictures on it, and listen/watch a few RSS feeds. The issue of the PSP not having any good games doesn't exist anymore because there are more than enough good games to satisfy anybody.

If you get a PSP, as mentioned above, try to get one with FW2.71 and below. Anything other than FW2.80-2.82. That way you can run homebrew applications/games.

A lot of people think that Sony is going to redesign the PSP soon, but I think that they are going to ride it out a while longer. The PSP has more than enough power and potential to keep it running for a while. Look how long the GameBoy Advanced lasted.

just did a google search on the gp2x and it looks to be a nice little handheld. Wish i could find some screens of games. Very interesting!

I think its more of a developers toy than anything right now. I don't like the fact that it runs on 2xAA, and the design of the unit could have been better thought out.

Thanx for the link. Some interesting stuff there. I could see this as becoming a geeks dream handheld. Layout does look a little questionable but the kick in teh pants for me is the batteries. However it still could gain a nice little following, like the tapwave zodiac had.

GET A GIZMONDO!!!!!! j/k :D

How can you say no to this? :D

Can you still buy a "Ceramic White" PSP anywhere?

If not that is fine.

Also, does it look like the PSP will go on sale maybe during the holidays, as it is now it sells for 200 by itself. Say 10-15 bucks or more off?

Thanks.

Edit: That picture looks awesome. If that is what all the games look like, I think this just sold me on the PSP.

GTA is one of the best looking games on the PSP imo, that's if you consider the size of the world and the amount of cars/people/items/etc. Highly doubt if the PSP will go on sale, Sony is greedy. I say get one off the FS forums for $150 or so. No clue on the white psp, again, you may want to check the FS forum.

BTW, the picture makes GTA look much worse than it looks on the PSP's screen.

Yea, that screenshot doesn't do the game justice at all. Test Drive Unlimited is going to have a pretty open driving environment too.

Can you add titles of the games under or on top of each picture please?
Thanks.

Done.

Keep in mind that the PSP will be more expensive than a DS. Games are more expensive, and in order to utilize many features a bigger memory stick is a must. Anything under 1gb I think is too small, you can get a 4gb for around $100 now. I have a 2gb and I can quickly fill it up, I'll probably upgrade to a 4gb soon.

Oh I understand the price & I don't care either way.
I want the one which I will enjoy playing more, and get more out of.
Yeah, it only comes with a 32mb or something tiny like that...

My plan would be, buy the PSP basic pack.
Buy 4-5 games.
Buy 1-2GB sticks (depends on what I feel I need)
Buy an extra battery.

Anything else that might be something I would need?

Edit:Thanks for adding the titles. They all look good.

I dont see the PSP getting any cheaper. Sony may introduce some bundles but I would recommend getting one off the FS forum. Some good deals there. As for the ceramic psp I havent seen it for sale in a long time. Please correct me if I am wrong. Great looking screens, forgot how good the gfx were. One reason I got the psp was for its audio in games. Burnout legends had a great soundtrack with MxPx and several others.

I have not found the need for an extra battery, look at getting a 4gb stick instead.

I actually surf the web, download podcasts and watch movies more than I game on my PSP, so disk space is a premium. I have a 2gb stick, which is fine, but at the prices I am seeing 4gb sticks I would get that today.

Gaming is good on the system, it is pretty much a portable PS1, but it is all the other stuff I can do with the system that made it worth it to me. My GBA sat in a drawer for long periods, I use my PSP everyday even if its just listening to a podcast.

The PSP comes with a 1800mAh battery, get the extended 2200mAh battery. It will come with the carrying pouch but If you want something different I recommend a Logitech Playgear Pocket.

I second the Logitech Playgear Pocket ($20), and a Hori screen protector ($5).

I have the playgear pocket for my psp and it has kept the screen in pristine condition. Highly recommended.
