Hello everyone!

I have a couple computers... They have always been good enough for what I need them for... and I have upgraded a few times and down graded too. I've had laptops, desktops, a netbook, smartphone which are all great.....,

but now what I really like is...

using the computers at the library! (great connection speed, no maintenance, good ergonomics, fast)

I find portable applications, "oh this is great!", everything good, but I want more applications... ones I use at home that aren't available on library computers. photoshop, sketchup, quickbooks, and a few others...

so now I discover thinapp and vmware workstation, oh this is good, but... its not going quite as planned!! Firstly, I wanted to be able to make thinapp applications at the library so I figured first I should be able to run windows xp in a vm on the library computer. I did 3 builds one of "thinapp vmware workstation 9", one the same but with windows xp installed, one the same as the first two +thinapp installed. but i get errors on build, dictionary problems trying to run, and other erros trying to run saying I don't know what. my thinapp of quickbooks didnt work and neither did photoshop.

i thought maybe I should try another thing to install a vm of windows xp on a usb, but now i understand ill run into problems because usb flash isnt meant to be written and read so much, so maybe i should use a different drive such as usb plug in hdd.

anyway i dont want to have to reboot my host machine at the library i just want to quickly (since they are time limited computers) load the application, "take care of business", save and close the application, pull the usb, and go!

so how should I begin learning how I can do this, is it simple, and do I need special hardware? i do have a usb 3.0 (i think wd 2.5" 1 tb) external hdd but not sure if it's got the right specs for many writing of small files.

do I go the vm win xp on usb/hdd or should I try to figure out better how to make portable applications and forget about trying to run a vm on host til later??
 
Wait, you're trying to thinapp the actual hypervisor?

That won't work, and you don't need to do it either - a thinapped application should have all the pieces it needs to run properly from the get-go on any similar OS.

As for quickbooks and photoshop - both of those have been tried in the past, with various degrees of success. Given you have thinapp, you should have a license, and thus support - I'd call VMware, and get their help finding out how to wrap them.
 
No, I didn't purchase thinapp, why would i pay for software i'm using for educational purposes? in this economy?? :p

Anyway, I would prefer not to use thinapp; what I would like is an alternative that is free. Know any? Would like to use public library computer to run my own virtual OS with installed applications for true portable computing, free, and legal. What about virtual box? I keep hearing this application name come up is it free what are the differences between workstation and virtual box?

some of them seem to be free or trials available.

But for entire VMs I only heard of portable virtualbox and Windows To Go, but tried neither of it. However Windows To Go probably isn't what you're looking for. It only works with Windows 8+ Enterprise license and you have to boot your pc from a USB drive containing this corporate Windows 8. Might be possible to run it in a portable virtualbox, but this is theoretical.
 
If the IT department of the library as any clue at all the USB ports are all physically inaccessible by patrons.
