Would you believe that the biggest deciding factor in the HD format war would be which side the adult entertainment industry backs? You probably weren’t that shocked either.

Thirty years ago, VHS toppled Betamax in part because of the adult film industry, and now some see blue movies playing a key role again as backers of HD-DVD and Blu-ray maneuver to make their formats the standard.

I shudder at the thought of porn in HD, there's a lot of camera and makeup trickery going on and I don't think that HD is going to bring out the best in a lot of the actors.
 
Do people even buy porn on Tape/DVD anymore? Way back in the day porn was a deciding factor because 99% of porn WAS on physical media. Isn't like that anymore...
 
I favor neither format, but anything that keeps Sony from stuffing another of their proprietary and expensive formats down our throats is fine by me..

Psssttt! You must be joking. If you are talking major releases sure but most of the porn content these days has very limited production. About the only trickery is that most strippers and porn stars make use of body make up to hide bruises, etc.

HD is a good thing.:p

But this has to be like the 100th story I have read on this subject but as someone said above, most porn today is on the internet not on physical media. I think porn will have almost no impact on these technologies.

Unless HD comes out of the gate in the next year with a serious price cut on Blueray, I think Sony will actually win this one.
 
I'm getting tired of hearing that Porn will decide the format. It is SO incredibly different this time around than beta vs. VHS.

Last time, your only other real choice was a magazine. Now, we have VHS, DVD, and the Internet.

Granted that HD porn will be amazing and there will most definately be demand for it, the industry won't have nearly the amount of leverage as they for beta/dvd.
 
Actually according to these numbers the movie rental and purchase segment is still the biggest hitter bringing home 28% of the total revenue wheres internet service only brought 22%.

Could those numbers close up this year, sure. But it's still a huge segment of the market, at least at face value.

In fairness however, you do also see pieces saying the opposite.

I suppose it could go either way depending on who you believe.

And honestly if you think about it, who is to say that either of the present formats is it?

Good conversation piece nonetheless. ;)

It doesn't matter if king tut released all his movies on HD or blueray, if the public accepts competitor X then that competitor will reign supreme... simple as that.

Seriously, who would want to watch porn in HD? I think low def does wonder for hiding the minnor "errors" on the "actors' " bodies. Also, I wouldn't be going HD until processors and video cards can play them on a PC without maxing out to the point where I can't be playing online and watch the DVD on the other monitor.

I posted the same thing months ago. People still either don't realize or refuse to acknowledge pr0no is the BIGGEST entertainment industry in the world. Hollywood raps a few features a week whereas the Adult filmmakers are pumping multiple titles in a day. It drove the development of streaming media and downloadable media. Pr0no had established storefronts peddling DVD's waaaaaaaaay before netflix or the like. Sony is letting some Exec's hangups blow the deal for them (unintentional pun). Still both will be arond for a while but no doubt due to HD's early adoption in the XXX world it will win out.
 
there is fuckall to win. I'm able to buy BD discs and grin ear to ear watching them. nuff said!
 
30 years ago they didnt have the internet. Internet takes a massive chunk out of video sales.

Porn wont decide anything. If both blueray and HDDVD get the same real movies then maybe porn will have an impact but blueray is winning the regular movie war. Millions more people buy normal theatre movies instead of porn, porn may sell a lot thanks to the porn addicts out there but its not even REMOTELY close to having the same audience as regular movie watchers, especially with women. No matter what the porn industry likes to say about themselves, they have an insignificant impact compared to Hollywood.

Why is it that I find it ironic that we are discussing porn, and something being shoved down someones throat seems... somewhat... related?
 
Why do people keep bring this up? Porn is on the net. It will have little to no factor on which format will win in this day and age.
 
for download. I'm not sure that people downloading porn will keep people from buying HDDVDs or Blueray. but I suspect that porn will go that way.

Its a stupid analogy anyway. Porn drove VHS because it was so much better to watch it at home than at an X-rated theater. If you can show that porn was the reason that DVD killed VHS, knock your self out. Until then, I won't believe that it is all that important to HD video.

Porn will go download (at least downloading whole movies will happen faster in porn than in mainstream movies) because the size of the market. Mainstream movies only can afford a few marketing campaigns a month, while a good porn selection is huge. Netflix competitors have an edge here, but I suspect they can't compete with a good datacenter.

I have no how much pressure the existance of downloadable HD porn will have on physical mainstream movies. Not enough for them to give up their precious DRM, I doubt. It might make the movie piracy scene a whole lot more active, but who knows how that affects the studio's bottom line.

well in my view the old days vhs won because of porn industry because TV was the only way we can watch porn. Nowadays, you watch porn on computer and that people use their hard drive to store, not a lot of people will burn it. Videos now is so disposable in a way that i don't think porn industry will matter that much
 
I know this is simply a link from another site's story, but wasn't there a HDDVD vs BluRay article that long ago where the conclusion was that porn won't do (excuse the pun) dick for deciding the "war". To paraphrase "Porn now a mouse click away" when referring to the VHS/BetaMax times. And really who wants to see high definition porn? DVD promised multiple angles etc etc, but those features of a dvd player never came to light, last I want to do is see the pimple on some chicks ass in all it's glorious color, or see the razor burn around some dude's shaved balls.. *barf*

lol I posted the same thing on AVS and got shouted down. Sorry I don't like razor burn, zits, bruises, scars, etc in HD.
