popping noise

I just received new speakers today from Amazon, microlabs FC360. They are a lot bigger than I was expecting and sound great. The problem is that when I power them on they make a loud noise. Even when I turn the volume on the "receiver" all the way down, it make a noise when powering off and a louder noise when powering them on. Should I be returning them or is this normal with some speaker systems.

Can you test this elsewhere? In a different place (i.e. in a different home) and a different source. Need to narrow it down. It might be the amp, but we need to eliminate other possibilities first.

I can't try it in a different home.
My logitech Z3 system didn't pop.
I tried the FC360 without a source - still pop

A low quality amp will usually make a popping sound when turning on or off the speaker amp. It's a YMMV thing when it comes to cheap amps. It's difficult to tell if it's actually a defect, or if it's just a badly designed amp (because it's cheap after all). I don't get this with higher quality amps. It's why I don't buy cheap speakers.

They don't have a power-mute relay in the amplifier. It's part of how the mfr is making a profit on them because it would have cost a dollar or 2 to include. There's nothing "wrong" with them but I returned the Klipsch ProMedia set for the same reason.
