Pop-Out Bay LCD

So I have this LCD:

I want to fit it in an aluminum casing and stick it in a drive bay. From there I want to epoxy a drive bay cover on it to have it cloaked.

What I am aiming at is to have a push button to operate a servo that pushes the LCD out of the bay (like a CD drive), where it automatically flips upward. Then I should be able to push the button again, and the LCD goes back into the bay (again, like a CD drive).

Any Ideas?

I'm thinking of some sort of rail mounted on the aluminum housing with a gear strip for the servo and a combination some sort of spring setup to flip the screen upward.

I also need to find an aluminum housing. Any help of that?
 
didnt TT or someone else make that for the PC??

Your best be would be to do the servo mod to make it so it can continually rotate like a motor would normally. Make a controller board that would utilize 2 switches on either side of the rail to determine the motors stop points. A spring to flip the screen up and hold it up while out, but not so strong that the motor retracting it cant just sorta fold it back down.

This is sort of what I'm thinking might work well for you:

You have some great ideas. The pulley system is something new to me, I was thinking of having only a gear strip along the LCD and a motorized revolving gear on the servo to move it, like near the end of this page of the Doom 3 Mod.

I am a bit confused on the pulley..is there a piece that travels along it and hits a button on each side to stop the servo movement? Is there not a servo that have go forwards and reverse?

Also, I need to figure out how exactly I will get it to flip up. Wouldn't the pulley system interfere with this?

No, nothing's over the top in this group. ;)

Never done this, only suggestion I'd make is to have the LCD drop down instead of flip up. Put it on a top bay, use a worm gear or something to push it out. As it comes out it pushes out the cloaking cover and tilts downward. Make a curved rail so it drops smoothly. Just reverse the gear to go up and in.

it might be easier to have it hang instead of having it go up. when it gets pushed out of the bay it could be on a kind of hinge so the screen hangs so that you can see it. then it would just slide up and in when it gets closed. let gravity do the magic.

I think I may "mix" both ideas and used a curved rail and jonathonball's design.

I just don't know how much room I am going to have in between the bay and LCD for it to move up and down..

Now, I don't know anything about wiring or controlling servos. All I would like to do is make a simple controller to do a forwards and reverse motion. How would I do this?

I am also tring to find an aluminum box to put the LCD in, where could I get this?

Now I am ALSO going to need to find this array of gears. McMaster?
 
gears motors look toward xmods ass they have small but powerful motors and a gear set :)

or just look at a hobbie shop...

oh for the rails keep em straight and build the lcd with a springloaded hinge(so the henges pull up the lcd now the difficult part :)

yes but would would keep my lcd from trying to up whilst in the cd bay
simple really... you can take a simple ultra small flat lock and make a motor that would lock in place and also release the lock :)

My first inclination would be to make curved rails. The shape of curve will govern when it starts rotating and how fast it drops down. Get a flat piece of teflon - say 1/16 to 1/8 thick, cut an arc in it and bolt it to the sides. You could cannibalize a spatuala from the local grocery store.

As it rotates down, before it fully leaves the bay, it will need room above the bay. If this is the top bay there is usually a half inch to an inch of room, but you may need to cut some sheetmetal.

If you used a worm gear, that could also be above the bay. Reason a worm gear came to mind first is I've got one about 10 feet long in the garage from a dead garage door opener. But that might be overkill...

Come to think of it, a garage door opener is a good analogy for what you want to do.

Plan on your first design not working well. So build and test it outside your case. If you're like me you have a couple of old cases in the garage to experiment with.

Sounds good, I will just have to see how I can incorporate a servo into this all.

Would you mind explaining the teflon part a bit? IS the purpose of this for the arc? I wouldn't want to bolt anything on the outside of the case, this is supposed to be stealthed.

basically you'll have two motors one side will be forward the other would be reverse :)

What are the purpose of the spring loaded hinges?

I am going to have the LCD falling down when it pops out instead of popping up now, sorry for confusing you hehe.

The way I was thinking, I really should have draw the pully attached to a different point on that end. What I was suggesting is similar to the gear setup you were thinking up. However, this just replaces some of the gears allowing you to only need the track gear mounted on the back of the LCD, a free spinning gear that contacts the track and then a pulley attached to it and the servo pulley...but looking back on it, if you have the room to mount the servo above the LCD, it would be more efficient to just mount the servo directly to the track gear and have it work that way.

As for how it flips up, I was thinking you could have some sort of spring mechanism inside that at a certain point gradually allows the screen to start flipping up and then does the reverse when it is coming back in.

The idea is that the platform that it rests on is only that little section on the back (I should have made it a different color on the picture for clarification) where it would rest and sort of be hinged some how. The idea of the roller is to counter act the spring as its sitting in the bay. Then as the LCD slides out, the spring is gradually able to tilt the LCD up. The platform might need to be a little lower than the LCD in order for the spring to be able to retract it all the way once it is all the way out. There will need to be some sort of stopper to allow for the motor to cut off at the right time obviously, and there are probably some minor details I didn't think about that will need to be considered. The only thing really that I am no happy with with that design is that you will have a visible gear track along the side or front of the LCD, if there is some way we could figure out how to get that track to go on the back it would look better. But the way I see it, you need to have that roller at the top in order for the spring to work properly.
 
Ohhh, you are still doing the spring loaded idea. Sorry for confusing you, but a few posts back I decided it may be better just to let the LCD drop down, I may just put it on the very top bay. This way, I wont need a fancy spring combination. I can hopefully gravity feed the LCD down as well.

Do tell me if you revise your plan, I will be buying an aluminum enclosure for the LCD tomorrow.
 
yeah its a car DIN LCD... i have tought about getting one off ebay and doing it...

its also touchscreen...

i wouldnt buy it but i was just showing it is available
 
O ok, I didn't read that post. That actually is a better idea if you think about it. When making it though, to insure that it has a smooth feed. You still may want to use the roller idea at the edge to make sure it has a smooth slide in and out. Something like a roller from the inside of an old mouse or out of an old cassett player would work well for this.

i was thinking of doing a similar project on a Lian-Li G50 which belongs to my wife. I was thinking of the drop down style and place it in the bottom bay since there's no floppy bays under it and the case is sitting on top of the desk.

If I dont do that... then I was thinking of doing a flip up style on my next Lian-Li case (PC-7B) this X-mas. Here is a link to a similar mod that can be very helpful to anyone trying to do that project. Hope it helps

To make the servo controller you just need a servo, 2 push button switches and a 3 position toggle switch.

The toggle switch will close the servo motor connection in one direction, the way that the motor would turn to push the LCD, lets say, out. Then you mount a push button switch at the end of the track so that it stops the motor at the end of the track. Then you toggle the switch the other way to make the motor turn the other direction and then another push button switch at the other end of the track would cut the motor off in that direction when it reaches the end.

There is another way that you could do this using a single push button to activate the motor, a button on either end to tell the motor to stop when it reaches the end. In the middle you would need an IC chip to get it to figure out which way the motor has to spin based on which ends button is pushed. That however is outside of my realm of knowledge. Though it is probably similar to the edge bots and sumo robots that I make that have edge detection so I could link you to the schematics for those if you would like.

Sounds liek a good idea. How would I wire this with three pin connection that is coming off the servo?
 
you would need to do the servo mod that removes the stopper to make it work like a normal geared motor. Then its just the black and red wires I believe...I dont remember colors though from when I used to work with RC cars.

What exactly am I looking for when calibrating? How do I know it's calibrated?

How will I control it with the three wires when done?
 
lol, I went ahead and just did it now. Took me 10 minutes. Now I need to calibrate..

Can anybody help me out? The site says:

To calibrate the servo just set it to a neutral (center position) 1500us. Use a small screw driver to adjust the main shaft as shown. Adjust until the drive shaft stops moving.[

Why don't you just mod a old grar drive CD rom to fit your LCD into. Just attach the LCD in place of the CD tray. You could either raise it by hand or use the gear drive from a second rom to bring it up into place............. :D

I've got a review sample of the TT 7" and it's a lot of fun to mess with......;)
