Poor X1800XT OC . . Why?

I just setup a new rig and running a Sapphire X1800XT (speced at 625 core / 750 mem) . .

I've read some 'guides' on OCing these cards, so disabled the 2 ATI services (smart and hotkey) . . also disabled the ati... entry from startup.

I'm using ATITools v .25 beta 14 (latest beta) . . It detects my "default" speeds as 593/694 (why??) . .

Anyway, I CAN run at 623/747 (which is what its rated for) no problem . . basically ANYTHING over these settings I get lockups or artifacts.

I checked voltage (within ATITool) and core GPU voltage = 1.275v and mem voltages are both = 2.097v

Whats the deal? I see all kinds of posts/reviews/articles hitting well over *stock* speeds . .

I have uninstalled drivers (using ati's uninstaller) as well as removing all entries from add/remove. I'm using 6.3 Cats FROM ati . .

I may try using DriverCleaner tonight and then install Omega's based on the 6.3 Cats..

Anyone have any suggestions? Is there a better way to do this? Am I missing something?

Try just with overdrive first to see how it goes and then try the other technics. You need to give more information as to your setup. It could be lack of cooling, cheap power supply, motherboard, etc......

From sig:

Opty 165 @ 2.43G (270x9) [1.432v loaded] ** Stock heatpipe cooler
EPoX EP-9NPA3 Ultra ** 1Gx2 PC3200 G.Skill 2-3-2-5
Sapphire X1800XT (623/747) =\ ** 450w OCZ ModStream
WD Raptor 36Gx2 (RAID 0) ** Samsung SpinPoint P 250G SATA

I was wondering if it may be powersupply....

Also, forgot to mention, I do have an AC Acellero X2 installed on the card.
Max load temps are 67c (GPU) after looping 3D Mark 06 for an hour and Prime (2x) running in the background.

Ok, I just wanted to make a post back, that I did get this thing to actually OC. I learned that I needed more gpu core voltage . . and I also backed off on mem voltage.

I'm at 645 core / 801 mem now. Voltages are 1.375v gpu, 1.90v memory.

Max temps after running Artifact scanner for ~30 mins is 75-76, I felt OK with that.

For anyone who cares, or has the same issue, check out my thread on Anandtech, which ultimately got me OCin properly. :)

well the voltages u posted at first were the 2D Voltages not 3D! which is probably why you couldnt OC at all, IIRC the X1800XT default Voltage is 1.4? and 1.475 for the XT-OC model
