Poor TF2 performance

You know what is in my tool bar right now? A freaking speaker icon and a clock. LRN2COMPUTE.....;)

While it's clearly environmental, I don't think it's accurate enough to just point at the task try. It's probably Firefox doing it, but having 30+ tabs open (and attempting to refresh, especially with any Flash, Java, or other CPU-/GPU- intensive stuff) while attempting to game is never going to work on any operating system or hardware. (Well, alright, when we start hitting 30+ cores, it may be fine - but definitely not on 2, 4, or 8)

I mean, I do have a lot of stuff running - typically IE with one frame up (and never something constantly refreshing), and my task tray has ATI's CCC, the X-Fi control panel, MS OneCare (yes, Antivirus and Firewall software), the Razer control panel, and my wireless network control panel. Task Manager shows 48 tasks total running. On the other hand, just sitting here typing this (not far from the environment I game in - indeed, almost exactly the same situation), my CPU is bouncing between '0%' and '1%'. That's an okay number for gaming. If his CPU really is getting up to nearly 15% before launching the game, that's a good hint that there is a hideous drag on resources somewhere that I don't have any doubt would be impacting game performance.

TF2 is deceiving. It is more demanding than people realize. With the new multicore rendering feature enabled, TF2 uses 100% of my E6600 @ 3.2 GHz. At that processor speed, with my 8800GTX OC, I get noticeable, but not gameplay breaking slowdown in areas with a large number of player models. This is with 4GB of ram at 1066MHz. I have concluded I would need at least a GTX260 to run the game without slowdown.

Also, I think there is widespread misconception about just how powerful an 8800GT is. I am sorry but the 8800GT is just not a great card. Lately every thread I read where someone is not satisfied with system performance is by an 8800GT user. 8800GTX and above users seem to be satisfied. The fact is the 8800GT lacks that last few drops of memory and power that make the 8800GTX a formidable card today. 8800GT was obsolete on launch day. It was designed to be cheap and run legacy games fast. It runs current generation games mediocre at best.

My 8800GT is a monster, TF2 plays at 60+ fps 24/7. wtf?
