Poor performance- why? Can someone help?

You will regret getting a new smartpower they are nearly as good as the old ones. They tend to fail in a year or two in a hot environment.

The PSU I whole heartedly recommend is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817139001

I have it and it will power all but the most extreme of systems get it and never look back.

Ill repeat YOU DO NOT WANT A SMARTPOWER. They are not bad supplys there are just better for the money.

antec was my fav back 4 years ago but not since then.. id go with zalman heat pipe 600w for same price as corsair and its not ugly colors and has nice big heatpipe.. DeChache doesn't even have the psu in his sig he loves it so much!

maybe i should get that 500w smartpower instead.

I have two 500w smartpower power supplies sitting on my floor. They are sitting on my floor because they are BOTH DEAD. I now run a Corsair 520w. :)

Just installed a new antec HE 550w power supply...

I don't notice any difference. Money wasted? Should I reinstall drivers bc I changed power supplies?

Have you addressed your heat concerns? 70C and 90C are way beyond normal. Are you sure you mounted the HSF correctly, or even remove the tape covering the TIM? You'd be surprised, my bro left on some silver foil tape he thought was TIM, but it was actually a silver foil sticker that was protecting the TIM.

I don't have any AS5 so I wasn't planning on removing the processor/heatsink, but should I do it anyway just to check it out? not sure what a TIM is, but I'm pretty sure I removed everytihng except the blue tape stuff on the heatsink itself bc I thought that was the compound that spreads heat.....I am not crazy about toying around with the processor

Yeah, heat sink mounting is my LEAST favourite PC activity :p

TIM is Thermal Interface Material - Like AS5, silicone paste, etc. Just wanted to see/know if you mounted it properly. If what was on there like gooey lottery scratch card stuff, then that's ok - usually there's a tape on that that people sometimes forget to remove.

Even though you don't like to mess around with mounting cpu heat sinks, I think you should remove and mount it again especially if you are really getting those temperatures, and not just incorrect readings.

How is air flow in your case.

What case do you have. I know my P4 ran hotter than Hades until I cut a blow hole in it and got a side panel that let me blow air on the CPU.

70C is usually normal for Pentium D. I was running a pendtium D 805 overclocked and it was running 80C...

I would reinstall windows again with the new power supply and install latest drivers...

See if the problems goes away.

Really? Sorry I didn't know - The last Pentium I owned (purchased new) is a P166MMX. My Opteron is overclocked 600Mhz to 2.4Ghz, and it runs max 45C full load.

No need to be sorry. pentium D is just a good heater in the winter time... :p

conroe is a different story... If I leave at default speed sometimes the chip is so cool that it functions weird.. It needs to be overclocked to work properly... :D
