Hi I am new to the forum.......I was just given 2 vid cards.....a asus 9520td card and a ati Radeon 9600 se....which card is better???? I was told that the ati was?? is it oc'able? is there a soft mod for it??? sry for all the questions I am really new to all of this

Thanx, Spire_X

How about a 5900XT? Or a 5700Ultra? Too expensive? hm... the two you've listed are pretty crummy...

Try picking up something used... something like my Ti4600 would yeild good (if not better) performance for less cost...

The 9600SE would be better than the 9520td (FX 5200). I don't think the 9600SE can be moded soft or hard, and I am also not sure how well it overclocks. Hope this helps...

Well the 9520td is a FX 5200 GPU.
The 9600SE is based off the 8500GPU, but has only a 64bit memory bus.

What this means is that the 9600SE has the faster GPU, but it is severly hampered by it's slow memory, the FX 5200 is better matched to it's memory, but is not that fast a GPU to start with.

What I would do with these cards, is try to overclock the memory on the 9600SE to see how far you can push it. (go to guru3d to find a overclocking utility for it) If you can get decent speed out of it, use that.

But if it still seems too slow for your needs, it dosn't hurt to try the FX 5200 just to see how it works for you. (most likely you will find it slower than the 9600SE)

9600se is not based off an 8500, its just a normal 9600 with 64bit memory bandwidth, pretty slow but better than an fx5200.

This would be correct, it is indeed off the 9600 core, just half (64bit) memory bandwidth. What does that mean to you? Don't expect to play many games above 1024x768 (and maybe some at 800x600). However, the 9600SE is indeed, as previously stated, better than the FX 5200.

And of course, welcome to the forums...

My mistake, it is the 9100 that is the same as the 8500, not the 9600. Been a while.

Heck with both you can switch them out for the game you want to play, EX 5200 for OpenGL.

Just kidding in a more realistic sense they are both near about the same speed, but I vote for the 9600SE as well for being probablly faster in most games.

The Geforce FX 5200 series are some of the worst "new" cards on the market. In some tests they were bested by the Geforce 4 MX 440. Which is sad to say the least.

Anandtech compared these cards in several games here

for the most part the 9600SE is faster, but depends on the game. In some games the FX 5200 is faster. The 9600SE is very crippled compared to the 9600.

I'd like to see the case where a MX 440 (a GeForce 2) bested the 5200 (I don't believe you).
However, it is common knowledge that a Ti4200 beats the 5200 and that a Ti500 will beat a 5200 in most cases.

As for a low cost high speed card, I like the Ti4600 (if you have the case that will fit it.. it's a long card like any of the newer high end ATI or Nvidia's). For a short card, I like the Ti4200 or the Ti200 (since most Ti200's will overclock to Ti500 speed). You should be able to get a used Ti4600 for less than $100 and a Ti200 for less than $40 (often less than $30).

Avoid all of the MX line... that takes you back to GeForce 2 days. You'll pay as much for an MX 440 as you'll pay for an older Ti200 anyday.

I play UT2004 with my Ti200 at 1280x1024 and it plays fine. My main machine has a Ti4600 though... and it's flawless there... but the Ti200 is a better value (though it's not even DX8).

As always, ebay is your friend.

Note: if you just have to have DX9 capabilities (something that most will NOT need), you're stuck paying the big bucks right now if you want a good performing card (>$120). Most people won't even need DX8 capabilities, which again makes the older GF3 cards a real bargain.

thanx guys.....I will try the 9600se.....but I will be gettin a new vid prob next moth
thanx for everything

here's one where the mx440 beats out a 5200 by a slight margin

here's a more significant performance gap

I don't really see why you're even mentioning a GF4Ti when we're talking about GF4MXes, FX5200s and 9600SEs

Currently i think the 9600 series (not the se) takes the budget market.

You can game fine on either card. Just dont go crazy with the settings.

the 5200/9600se's viability as a gaming card is very dependant on the rest of the system. With a fast processor, i imagine any game will be ok, with something like a 1ghz or about there, its going to show its weaknessess a lot more.

Well... I know, but the subject says "poor man's vid card"... I thought some extra advice on better alternatives to the FX5200 and 9600SE was warranted. Just my opinion.

Personally, the original poster should be thankful he got the cards for free. I would never choose either card today.
