So I am running a quadcore 8800GTX SLI setup with 4gb of ram, and running CoD4 at 1920x1200 with mid settings I get 90 fps, which then dips down to 50~ when there is a big firefight.

I tested the temps on the system and everything is in the green, so I don't think it is clocking back because of heat. I have no idea what the hell is wrong. I distinctly remember getting a whole lot more when I first ran the system.

Could anyone shed some light on this issue?

Hmm, I play that game with my sig rig with everything maxed out at 1920x1200 and I average around 80FPS. But if theres a case of a big fight with lots of people and SMOKE is involved (I guess smoke just takes extra juice to render?) I can dip down to the 50s as well.

Depth of field also affects framerate.

I'm on a 8800GTX, 3.0 Ghz core 2, 1920*1200 rez and I dip below 50 with a lot of people and smoke. I never have soften smoke edges enabled.

No system overclock currently, I only tightened the memory timings. I believe the PCI-E frequency is set at automatic or full.

I am running the latest 175.16 drivers, as the 175.19 seem poor.

I dunno, I think it's about average for your setup.
I play on single GTX and I get dips in the 50's at times, in multiplayer that is. Everything max, 4xaa @ 1680x1050 sometimes becomes unbearable on maps like Overgrown.
