Politics & Tech

My point still stands. Nobody can make you vote a certain way.

If anything, the point you make really shows what the armed forces think of democrats.

Well that quote got all kinds of rumble f'ed but whatever. On the part about soldiers being "forced" into voting Republican... what a bunch of crock. If anything its the other way around. Obama has a better voting record, when he actually does vote anyways, on military issues than McCain. Also most service men and women dont support a draft, a person who volunteers to be a soldier is far more effective than the smuck who got tossed into the mix without his willingness to want to be there, while McCain has it on his own website that he isnt afraid to reinitiate the draft.

While you're right on that... You're forgetting some stereotypes and bigger worries that guys have in military. First of all, Republicans usually allot more for the military. Career military guys love that because well, you actually get training equipment. I was in during the Clinton to Bush years. It was a big difference. During the Clinton years, you'd get to blow off a few grenades every few months. Maybe one Javelin round per Battalion once a year. ...that's only if they had enough left in the budget at the end of the fiscal year. Bush came and you got all the rounds that you wanted. (of course, this was at a high cost) Also, adoption of new tech was a LOT quicker because we'd get the funds. Under Bush, we got new radios, night vision, weapons sights (M68 aimpoint), etc. It was almost like we got a blank check.

The other big concern in a combat unit. Democrats love to push gays (and being openly gay) into the military. In an all-male MOS, that's not something that most guys are excited about. Seriously, there's times you have to spoon or die. ...you don't want to find out that your battle buddy fantasized about it.

Granted, I'm a libertarian/democrat. You have to remember that most military career guys don't pay attention to those voting records. ...and those VA benefits that McCain opposes don't concern the active duty lifers (that make up most of the NCO chain). Most of those guys only see what affects them in the immediate future. I'm not saying that it's logical, it's just what happens.

And you folks still think an election is what picks the President, sheesh. :)

I haven't seen one mention of the Electoral College, even though it's a joke in and of itself, but even so... the myth that the American voting public at large has any say in things anymore, hasn't for what, 185 years or so, is beyond me.

Perhaps you have to look deeper why the framers of the Constitution setup the Electoral College. For the very reason we are a federation/republic based on representation. The electoral college ensures no single radical can take over the country, or a group of radicals. Abolishing the Electoral College is essentially like eliminating the Senate. Have you not learned from history? This happened in the 1860's, and it resulted in over 600,000 American deaths. Could you imagine what would happen today? hah.. need I go further? Good luck on dividing the US into two separate nations...

ummmm.... in 1860, the problem was that there was Lincoln vs a massive clusterfuck of candidates. The electoral college doesn't change that at all. Besides, getting rid of the EC in a prez election doesn't have to affect any other system.

And while the eventual outcome of the civil war did include freed slaves, which was arguably the biggest step forward this countries taken, the civil war was still a tragic event that could have been avoided, with the slaves freed and thousands less people lost. The attitudes and grudges that arose out of the war still linger, as many northerners and southerners in many parts of this country still hold a distrust/dislike for the other part of the country. It's sad

No, there are southerners that hang on to it but they are generally toothless rednecks.

Otherwise the rest of the country let that shit go about the time the last civil war survivor kicked the bucket.

nah - I live in the north and I see it sometimes, up here it's just a less obvious than the rednecks.

yeah... there was a little more to it than is in a 6th grade history book.. heh. Time now to learn so history isn't repeated.

See it how?
it's jabs in political conversations and stuff frequently where southerners are considered ignorant and racist simply cuz of where there from. The rednecks certainly don't help that impression either.

And yes I understand how the EC is implemented in the representation for congress, but that doesn't mean it has to be implemented for the prez election

Thats just a generalization of the south by alot of america not a distrust/dislike because of the civil war.

IMO the only reason they are connected is because theres a group of super ignorant folks that proudly display the confederate flag in their pickup trucks.

What I find laughable is that everyone seems to think that the President somehow effects their lives in any significant way. Furthermore all of this bullshit that each candidate is spewing from now to inauguration day will never come to fruition. They might as well be promising you all chocolate milk in the drinking fountains.

Everyone complains about their congressman and president, when you should really be paying closer attention to your city councilmen.

PS who cares which candidate is the most tech savvy, most schooled in foreign affairs, most military experience, best kisser, etc. Each president has a lengthy list of cabinet members anyway. Fun factoid: the only president to leave office (not assassinated) with a higher rating then when they were elected was Reagan, he never bothered himself to know the issues. He was an idea man.
