What is the difference between the police using YouTube to get info on criminals and using the news or shows like Americas Most Wanted? I can’t believe people are citing potential “privacy” issues.

A handful of police departments have utilized YouTube as a law enforcement tool, putting up video of suspects and eliciting help from the Internet-using public in identifying them. Experts say the idea has promise, but it's too soon to tell whether it will have staying power amid constantly evolving technologies and the difficulty of making a video stand out among millions. Some also see a risk of fruitless tips, misidentifications or privacy problems.

It's not like we're talking about fine upstanding citizens, here. I'm sorry, but the privacy if criminals will always take a backseat to my daughter's safety.

criminals seem to forget that they waive their rights by committing a crime.

Up here in Canada, it has solved 2-3 crimes within the GTA, out of like 5-10 posted crimes. Pretty amazing.

No different than posting wanted posters or details on the local news. Actually it might be more effective because of a wider captive audience and the ability to replay the file.

This goes well with the story the other day about governments wanting to ban posting violent videos. The police are smarter than the politicians on this.

I thought this was an article about how the police surf YouTube looking for videos that idiot crooks posted. That has to be pretty embarrising to have a video of you robbing an ATM that you posted on YouTube shown in court.
