Hello everyone,

I'm looking for pointers for overclocking my i7-980X. I'd like to overclock it to the highest possible stable setting (4.0 sound about right?). That said, please link me to some sources that can accomplish this. Here's my rig:

My Specs can be found in my signature.

I would look at the dozens of threads for overclocking i7 processors. The procedure will be the same. Or just follow the following basic steps:

0. Replace the stock cooler with a better model. This is an essential step if you really want to overclock more than a small percentage..

1. Bump the BCLK a few MHz without changing any voltage
2. Stability test (IBT, prime95 ...)
3. If 2 passes repeat step 1
4. If not either quit or add 0.05V to the vcore.
5. Then Stability test.
6. If passes go to 1
7. If fails either quit or look for a more detailed guide..

I have a Scythe MUGEN-2 Rev. B which should be fine. I am new to overclocking so if you can keep things as simple as possible, that would be great.

The simplest possible is to use just steps 1 to 3. I mean do not touch voltages. However that may limit your overclock to a level less than you are shooting for.

Why are you using such a cheap cooler for a $1000 processor?

according to tom's hardware it was the top performing heatsink. the ultra 120 was superior by a occasional +/-2 C difference. im not gonna fork out another 50$ for that.
