I'm going to try and post some pictures of my folding room, and some equipment I bought for the folding room. I just created an account at Photo Bucket and uploaded my photos.

I'll try and keep track of my expenses. I don't plan on buying any air conditioning at this time, but I am planning for it. I won't get done before it gets cold again this fall. I'm kinda slow on my projects. Just ask my wife!

#1 Water damage from my leaking shower upstairs got me to thinking about a folding room for my boxen.

#2 Here is the same vantage point, but with the drywall and insulation removed.

#3 I got some supplies at Home Depot. Here are 12" x 20" gables for the outside of my home where the air will enter the folding room.

#4 I got two gables; here is a close up of one.

#5 On the inside of the folding room I will have two filters. Each filter is 20" x 25". Planning of the box for the filters is for a later day.

#6 Close up of one filter.

#7 My Big Ass Fan!

0804050046.jpg

#8 About 15 inches for this roof exhaust fan.

#9 The fan is kinda deeeeeep! :D

#10 $58 at Home Depot.

0804050075.jpg

#11 1,000 CFM --- cubic feet per minute.

0804050079.jpg

#12 The wall where the fan will be mounted. I demolished this wall today.

0804050083.jpg

#13 The exterior of my home where the gables will be installed for the intake of air.

Updated photos from August 2008. {Posted in July of 2009. Sorry. I was too busy building this room to take photos and upload them.}
I will go take some new photos. I have made some progress since these photos were taken last summer.

Here is what the room looks like from the garage. The main wall is still torn down. The inside wall is almost rebuilt.

1-outsidelookingin.jpg

The next two photos show the waste water pipes that I am covering up. In the past they were just hanging free inside the room. I can't have them rupture on me, so I have to cover them up with some heavy duty lumber to keep me away from them.

This angled pipe was quite a challenge.

2a-coveringthepipes.jpg

I built this wooden stud to protect the angled pipes. I attached them to the ceiling with a large bolt.

2b-coveringthepipesceiling.jpg

The gables are now attached to the house. In this photo they were just put in place, but not permanently attached. I have since used construction adhesive to hold them in place and to provide a waterproof barrier.

3bgables.jpg

The room now has a permanent built-in counter top. The new wall is also visible. The room will have double walls in most places including the floor and ceiling.

4tabletopandnewwall.jpg

I used a 2" by 10" stud to cover up the waste water pipes.

I won't finish the walls until I get farther along with the air filter woodwork in front of the gables.

5newstudwall.jpg

The base of the new stud wall has dual 2"x4"s. They are much easier for me to work with than a single 2"x4".

Want to see my favorite tool? This is it. A "Senco" brand screw gun. It can screw some large metal... I think up to 3.5" or so. I use it quite a lot. I like it even more so than my next tool on display.

10-Senco.jpg

I love my Makita 10" sliding compound miter saw. This saw is so nice... it makes the job much easier for me. Accurate repeat cuts.

I took these pictures today. I am recovering from shoulder surgery... so I can't do much except take pictures and upload them to photobucket.

The first two photographs show the framework to keep the air filters in place. It might not look like much, but it has to keep the filters in place while the large fan (shown above) sucks in outside air. Lots of detailed work to get the framework in just the right places.

Both filters should be ready to go in their framework. I will use each filter in the largest configuration possible. In other words, I will not be cutting the filter down to a smaller size.

The walls are nearly complete. I have installed lots of insulation along with two sheets of OSB (oriented strand board). The only thing that remains for the walls is to put down another layer of plastic for a moisture barrier, and then install the drywall. I won't put up the drywall until the project is nearing completion.

The gables are glued in place. I have a piece of metal that I plan to put on the outside of the house that will cover up some of the defects when I cut the opening in the siding. The piece of metal will serve to keep water from running inside through the gable and also cover up any cosmetic deficiencies on the outside.

We have had lots of rain in Idaho in June of 2009. We had the wettest month in history... and no rain entered through the gable.

Back in the 50's I remember we bought a bomb shelter much like that:p

Keep in mind the most important thing is, all incoming air must pass through the front of the computers and exit through the rear. In other words you will need a wall sealing the room into two units. Into that wall cut out the shape of each case. Filtered air incoming passing through the farm being exited out the back.

I only mention it to clarify what I had in mind. Make sense?;)

Wow nice I'm jealous at least you can put proper cooling in there.. I'm pretty hosed as far as that goes! Grats on the room and Fold [H]arder!

Maybe I can build that room on for the baby and add a server room there too....

This will be good to see.

If you have to take any trips to the hospital, for work injuries we want pics of that too :p

Nice !! Thats pretty much the exact fan I was talking about in the other thread. 1000 cubic feet of air per minute should pretty much keep the boxen nice and cool.

you guys take this folding@home thing pretty seriously

interesting :)

I take it you don't fold. Yes, I take folding seriously. :)

Ya, you gave me the idea. Thanks! I went to the roofing aisle at Home Depot and saw all sorts of things that interested me. The gables will work perfectly. I had some other ideas about an air inlet in my wall, but the gables are superior to my other ideas. I noticed that the big ass fan has some requirements of how much cubic inches of open space are required to suck in fresh air. I put away the 1,600 CFM fan after learning about the amount of clear space required on the inlet side. In other words, I could not cut open such a big hole in my wall to accomadate a 1,600 CFM fan. The 1,600 would probably be too noisy as well.

yes don´t fold, at least not yet. but soon ;)

Great, any help we can provide just let us know.

However it is only fair to warn you that it is a sickness. Pocatello is moving into the advanced stages.

I have been able to stop (so far) at a corner in the basement....... I know it will get worse.

Have fun! :D

I'm right now discussing with the general contractor for the specs of the storage room (which will be where I will put folding boxes). I'll try to bring pics this week but we must first deal with the fact that the drywall is installed too fast before I had a chance to check the rough wiring...

I like some of your ideas but mine might be different ;)

Yep, there are a lot of very serious folders here. This team didn't accomplish and maintain its #1 position all these years on a shoestring budget. It takes a lot of dedicated work, ingenuity and a tinge of insanity. It might seem like sheer madness to some visiting this forum, but it's all for a good cause.

Everyone is insane at a certain point. Some will spend a lot on cars, others on fishing gear and you will see that our madness is for a good cause :D

Madness ?

Nice... very nice.

Are you sure that the gables are going to provide enough "make up air" for the fan to be 100% efficient? I have a similar set up in a RhinoLinings application booth I used to own, and I found that the filters had a pretty drastic effect on the efficiency of the fan. If you haven't already, you might want to consider that...

Again, nice room. Following along here may very well inspire me to move my farm into the cellar this summer... It's already getting a little hot in our office, and it snowed today, so I think the summer months may become a bit toasty....

Wow, some serious and inspiring team spirit around here and I don’t impress easily.

Personally I love the space allocated to me in our house, my physical climatic needs are a bit different then the wife’s so I’m sort of in my own world (in so many ways). I don’t need heat no matter how bad the winter becomes and I can keep it as cool in here as I like during summer.

The biggest issues I see coming in the future are energy costs but even there one can use technology to help out. Using only 4 machines I now produce more WU then when I was supporting 20 odd boxen.

Unfortunately I have no control over utility costs and taxes and it goes without saying this is the wrong thread for that.;)

Yes, I think I understand. But I respectfully decline to make a room within my room. ;)You see... I plan to chill the entire room. :) And I fold nekkid! The only cases I will keep are the ones in my office (computer room) not in my folding room. I'm thinking about putting some shelving along the side of the room... if you look at the picture showing the door (Picture #12) it would be thru the door on the back wall. I could have 3 shelves--- at about 4', 5.5', and one near the ceiling... run them along the length of the back wall... mount lots of naked boxen on the wall.

I was worried about the size of my opening as well. What happens if my fan cannot draw enough air? What does 100% efficient mean to me and my folding room?

There were requirements listed on the fans.. they need so much fresh air intake. So many square inches of free space. I will be short with only two gables. If I had gone with the 1,600 CFM fan I would have been really short of the ideal.

What happens if my fan cannot get anought fresh air?

OMG!!! am I the only girl in this forum?!?!

You might be the only girl posting in the DC sub-forum! I don't know any girls, so I can't be certain. ;)

Haha I noticed her sig but wasn't going to mention it. I've seen other people on the forum react, umm how do I put it nicely, LIKE 14 YEAR OLD BOYS.

It won't be able to pull 1000cfm through the fan if there isn't enough make up air... not a show stopper or anything. What I did notice in my case was that as the filters slowly became restricted, the material I was applying was not being evacuated as quickly as it was when the filters were clean.... Now, I understand that won't be an issue in your case, but I would imagine that the specs for make up air on the fan don't take filters into consideration. Therefore, the amount of make up air would need to be greater than what is listed if your going to use filters...

Probably a bit of a nit-picky detail, just my thoughts... 1000cfm is a lot, and I'm sure that if you get 800cfm, that will be more than adequate.....

Any Updates?

No, I have been too busy to post in the DC forum, let alone take more pictures!

I did get hurt yesterday, but again... no pictures. I cut my head open. I was sitting on the floor, putting construction adhesive on the floor where I am building a second wall. I was putting in the studs... two by four construction. When I got up I banged into a steel shelf support brace made out of angle iron. It was a very strong piece of steel... shaped like the letter "L" for strength. 1/4 inch thick. My head collided with the sharp edge. I felt really dizzy for awhile... but I could not sit on the floor due to the fumes from the glue.

I quickly left the room and sat somewhere else in case I was going to pass out. As it turned out, there was a ton of pain and blood, but no unconsciousness. I kept on working because I was in the middle of using the adhesive... and there is a 30 minute window to get your stuff together or it is too late. I finished about 2 hours later.

My wife was shocked at the amount of blood on my shirt. There was a "train track" of blood from the wound dribbling down thru my hair.

Since I eat a diet high in all of the wrong kinds of things... my blood clots pretty fast.

I'm back at work today... at the J.O.B. I have to rest up and recuperate so I can get back to my folding room later this week.

Pics of the shirt?

Trail of blood?

Anything!??!?

Ohh..... Glad your ok :p

How about we get some good threads back up top. The drama shit sucks ass. Give us an update buddy on the room bud. :) Hows that head wound? All healed up?

I have been too busy building new boxen and carving up the folding room. I promise some new pictures in the next week or two. I gotta get the room finished before the snow starts. Or maybe December, whichever is later!
