I'd say this is a solid alternative to the 8400GS deal. You get extra memory bandwidth, 2xDVI, and a warranty to boot. The only downside is the fan, I prefer my low-end cards to be fanless.

Some of these PNY cards' fans don't have dynamic RPM and are at 100% 24/7 ... YMMV of course.

You can get $75 through mail-in-rebates if you buy 3. Limit 3 rebates per person.

I bought 3. Thanks OP.

mmmm... this is a good deal. even if the fans are pegged. i hate MIR's, but sometimes they are plausible. SOLD OUT already though. not low profile anyway

Good luck. Last time I did something like that they (Cooler Master) accepted one rebate and not the other.

There's three spots on this rebate for three UPCs. It's stated right on the rebate form.

Card is showing Sold Out now on Newegg.

Wow, sucks that I missed this. I've been wanting an upgrade, and since I already have one 8600gt, I could have added another one or two at this price very easily. Not to mention when I can afford a real upgrade, I could probably have gotten at least what I paid back on them.

Just out of curiosity, how would this compare to a 6800GT card? I guess I could dig up that Tom's Hardware link that compares all video cards.

It is quite significantly better. I had a 6800GT, and my 8600GT is far better. That said, they are both old cards, and will struggle on many newer games.

It is too late now, but according to toms hardware the ddr3 version (which this card is) is the same tier as the 6800 ultra and the ddr2 version compares to the 6800gt.

Thanks, so this card is either much or marginally better. My 6800GT is about 4.5 years old, but is working just fine. I don't do much gaming on it. But I was thinking a newer card would be more power efficient and a little better for the occasional gaming.

$16 is a drop in the bucket for a video card upgrade. Maybe 8800GTs will be in the sub-$40 range sometime this year.

Here's a link to the Tom's Hardware comparison of the two (I hope it's ok for me to link there). It seems to be about 30% better than the 6800GT, and in most of the situations where the 6800GT really struggled, the 8600GT was far better. I remember being pretty happy with the upgrade when I did it.

Thanks, that's interesting. I checked out gpureview.com to see its comparison of the specs and they're surprisingly close.

the 8600gt is over twice as fast as the 6800gt in modern games. dont look at initial 8600gt reviews from when the card was released because the release driver was garbage. the next couple sets of drivers made a MASSIVE difference and I know because I owned one. in FEAR alone the performance was almost doubled from the release driver. anyway here are just a few benches from some games that show the 8600gt was decent with newer drivers. remember too that the 7600gt is faster than a 6800gt so this will give you an idea if just how much better the 8600gt is.

For a basic/low-end gaming card, the 8600GT isn't bad. IIRC 8600GT = 9500GT (or at least, very close)

^ Thanks, cannondale. I'll have to keep my eye out for another sweet deal like this.

For price comparison purposes, I think I paid ~$30 AR for an ATI 4550 for my other computer (an HTPC), which from what I understand has horrible game play. But I just cared about its HDMI port and low power consumption (25 W max), so that didn't bother me.
