PMP with FLAC and Bluetooth

The Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6" fits my budget and requirements, but its unfortunate that its forever limited to Gingerbread.

Are there any other alternatives that are on ICS/JB? I actually don't mind getting a larger player for as long as it can run a more current version of Android.

Bluetooth is a must, and FLAC natively would be a plus, though I cna just get an app for that. iDevice is a must NOT.

Just about any Android phone that will allow you to run a custom ROM, since usually most custom ROMs will have FLAC playback enabled. Heck I think ICS and up will play FLAC out of the box even...

Just because it's a phone doesn't mean you have to use the phone part.

People seem to like used Galaxy S1's since they have the better DAC.


Just out of curiosity, why do you need something higher than Gingerbread just to play music? :)

This is going to be a wild guess, but weren't reviews of the Samsung Galaxy Player stating a slow or buggy interface/UI?

I'm assuming higher versions of Android would run on better and faster hardware.

There is another PMP that has FLAC playback and a very good amp, but reviews show it has questionable build quality and it costs close to $800 to $900. It doesn't run Android though.

I, too, have been trying to find an Android-based FLAC PMP that isn't a phone since the phones that are subsidized require a contract and the unsubsidized ones are expensive. Unless, there is a cheaper model you can recommend that's pretty decent in the audio quality department.

Heck, I've been desperate enough to build one myself given the slew of new do-it-yourself boards coming out other than the Raspberry Pi such as the Exynos-based one. I'd imagine it'd cost quite a bit getting a board, touchscreen LCD, battery and other hardware to build it yourself though.

There were some issues with the UI on some user reviews I've read, and hard to imagine those issues would be resolved without an OS upgrade.

Also, I had Bluetooth issues before on a spare phone running Gingerbread. Thought not entirely sure if it was the phone (HTC) or the OS at fault.

I am assuming the slow/buggy UI is due to slow hardware of the SG Player. That's why I'm thinking that maybe one with Jelly Bean will have faster hardware to fix it. But, I haven't seen any Jelly Bean-based PMPs.

I will have to check Asian sites for them if they do exist.
 
Is your expectation to be able to play FLAC files via Bluetooth, or do you just want support for both?

Bluetooth audio (AD2P) caps at 768 kbps, which is about half the Red Book standard. So using FLAC files (assuming a CD-rip) doesn't gain you anything quality wise via Bluetooth. It is, of course, still beneficial, assuming a suitable DAC implementation/audio output directly from the player and/or to avoid having files in multiple formats.

I don't have any incentive to create another library on another format, so would really prefer to just stick with my FLAC.

I know its an easy batch-run-command...but still. Prefer to keep library simple.

And that's on a good day when the stars are perfectly aligned in your favor - usually bluetooth audio tends to suffer horribly even at lower bitrates. Makes using FLAC kind of pointless but then again that's my opinion.

Anyway around here you can buy a Samsung Galaxy S on Craigslist for $80 - $100.

It's got official CM10.1 available and has the Wolfson DAC which makes it an excellent personal audio player. Load a kernel with the Voodoo audio driver and you've got a kickass audio player with top notch audio quality. :) Of course you'd have to use standard corded headphones to get that awesome Wolfson DAC sound, but still....
