Plz Help... Hard drive formatting question

Never dealt with larger HD's so this may be a stupid question.

I purchased a WD 160GB SATA HD to replace one of my 80GB HD's cause I need more room. The 80GB will go in a external case once I get one.

When I installed it and went to format it there was only one 128gb partition. I thought that perhaps my Windows XP did not recognize my 160GB HD so I used the WD formatting utility to format the 160gb drive into two 80GB drives. It wouldn't let me. All I could get out of it was two 64.3GB partitions.

What gives?
