pluggin in speakers locks up PC

Just seemed to happen lately, but if my headphones are plugged in, if i unplug them and plug my speakers in, it locks up the PC...anyone else ever see this?
 
Loose sound card maybe? That happens to me somtimes which is why I kept my headphones/speakers plugged in.
 
Onboard sound? A lot of newer ones have UAJ (Universal Audio Jack, basically autosense what's plugged in). Could be drivers are FUBARed.
