Plug something into USB port and computer crashes

This problem popped up a week or two ago, though it's only hit me a few times because I tend not to insert/remove things from my USB port much. If I put a USB drive or headset into my front USB port, my computer instantly crashes to a state like a hard off but the lights stay on and it does not reboot. This setup has worked fine for years and, as I noted, this problem started recently and out of nowhere.

Anyone ever seen anything like this?
