Hi guys,

Just wondering what options are out there for PLP setups. I know a lot of the people here use Dells and that's fine, but the 30" Dells are really expensive.

So my question is: Can you do something like a 17" - 27" - 17" setup and achieve the same looks or am I missing something here?

thanks in advanced for any info.

Sorry but huh?

OHHHHHHH, sorry, I just got it: PortraitLandscapePortrait. Sorry, I should've went to sleep 5 hours ago.

EDIT: I reread your post and still don't understand what you're asking. Maybe I need a coffee...

I think you want to look for similar resolutions. I was considering a 2560x1440 with 1440x900 on the sides.

Which I think is 19", 27", 19" IIRC.

I'm just trying to figure out if there are other configurations that work in the PLP model other than the 20/30/20 that is normally done with Dell monitors.

Sorry for the confusion. It's looking like I'll have to go for 20/30/20 or 20/27/20 to get the same clean look though.

There are no other PLP setups that look as nice as 20 - 30 - 20. The problem is pixel size -- the 27" 1440 monitors have much smaller pixels than 1440x900 monitors, so portrait monitors would be much taller than the 27".

The 27" is 13" tall, while a 19" 1440x900 monitor is more than 16" tall.

900 pixels is also not wide enough for decent portrait use -- there would be horizontal scrolling on near every major website, a significant usability problem. You want at least 1080, preferably 1200, pixels of horizontal display for efficient portrait use.

There are a couple of 22" 1920x1200 monitors that are the closest match for 2560x1440 monitors, in terms of pixel size, but they are costly. The Lenovo 220x can be found refurbed for reasonable prices, but it's of questionable quality.

You also don't want to use a TN panel in portrait mode.

If I were going for a PLP setup on the cheap, I'd probably stick with HP's line -- a zr2440/2740, and the 21" version in the same line. They won't look "matched" in the same way as the 20-30-20 configuration, but they'll looke nice and be usable.

Find the old HP 17" 1440x900 monitors. That would be a better fit.

HP W17Q (Matte)
HP W1707 (Glossy)

Thanks for the input everyone.

I guess my best bet is to start with the 20" Dell monitors and save until I can comfortably afford the 30"-er

Thanks again guys :)

Another option is to go for a HP setup. I bought my 20" LP 2065's refurbed online for about $80 each. Pair some with a ZR30W and you're gold.
