Plotting new system... 850w or 1000w?

In a few months time I'm planning to go upgrade crazy on a new system. Here is what my system will look like:

i7 920 @ a target of 3.8ghz OC
6GB DDR3 1600
eVGA x58 mobo
SLi GTX 280s (615mhz... slight OC)
1x 300GB Raptor
1x 640GB HD
Hauppauge HVR-2250 Tuner Card
Sound Blaster Titanium
4x120mm fans

I think I'm on the edge here with that setup according to some PSU calculators at full load. Normally I'd just go for the 1000w but the issue here is I would then need a new case to fit the larger PSU.

Would 850w be enough or would 1000w be the safe bet? If so, what is a good case for this kind of setup? I need something light with high airflow but not as expensive as a Lian Li.

OMG! Go 1000W!! lol. But seriously, I'm of the opinion that bigger is better.

But look at it this way.. Find the PSU that will be the best efficiency for your specific load. In otherwords, if you are at 91% load with an 850W and it's at 78% efficiency, that's not very good.. But if you are at say 72% load with a 1000W and it's at 82% efficiency, you'll be a little better off.

As for needing a new case. Some of the newer 1000W PSU's are actually the same size as the 850W. In either case, do some research to find out what your Wattage will be. Also, remember, that OCing something will increase the amount of voltage that's used. So if your using a PSU calculator, they may not show the correct wattage required.

To wrap it up, the 850W should be fine, and I doubt you would have any problems. I bought my 1000W just so I wouldn't have to upgrade in a year.

Good luck to ya!

The new nvidia and ati graphic cards are supposed to be out in 5 months or so, so if you are planning to wait 3 months to build an sli rig with 280s you may consider waiting till then.

Then again something new is always around the corner.

The 850 will be more than plenty.

nVidia is Q4 for the DX11 cards, but there won't really be any DX11 games out for a long time (DX10 penetration is what, a handful of games now?) so the SLI 280's will handle anything that's out this year assuming he isn't playing on a 30" screen.

Hmm I'll grab either the Corsair or Zalman 850w PSU...

I may just get one GTX 295, I could sell the GTX 280 that I have now. Cheaper and more power efficient with only a loss of around 5fps in Crysis.

Any reason as to why it is better?
The Zalman is a mediocre Enhance-based design, whereas the Corsair is a pretty good CWT-build PSU. The Corsair will have slightly better ripple and voltage regulation, as well as most likely better efficiency at higher loads. Basically, it can take more punishment without faltering.

Ok, looks like I will get the Corsair then. Thanks :)
