My boss wants me to prototype a website in plone, but the problem is, I have no idea how it works.

I've tried using Plone.org's documentation, but they seem to expect a level of knowledge and expertise that I do not have. For example, they go on about Archetypes, registrys, and about about a dozen TLAs that I look up but don't understand.

I'm really just looking for a website, faq, or piece of documentation that can explain to a complete noob how plone works so that I can get started working with it.
 
As someone has been using Zope/Plone for the past several months at my place of work, I would recommend starting here: http://plone.org/documentation/manual

After reading through the documentation, the only thing is to jump in and get your hands dirty with it. Install Zope (written in python) and then the Plone product and have at it.

From using Zope/Plone, I can say its gets pretty complicated until you have an understanding and feel for it. I am still trying to figure out how to do a lot of things, but once you learn how it works, it is a very robust CMF/CMS.
 
Oh yippy! Somone else who uses Plone! I have just kindof been messing around with it and learning from that..... Quick question... How do you add programs that you downlad from Plone's site? I can't figure it out ... plz PM me
 
To install products from the Plone site, it usually just consists of putting them in the 'products' directory, then going into the zope management interface, restarting the server, then in 'control panel/products' make sure the product you added is listed.

Once it is installed in zope, you have to go to the site you are working on in the zmi, then 'portal quickinstaller', then check the box for it and click install for that site. BTW, you can also do this step from the site itself instead of the zmi by going to 'preferences/add.remove products'. I just tend to use the zmi since I am already there after installing it.

Figuring out Zope/Plone can be quite confusing and I am still trying to figure out the best way to do a lot of stuff. I am lucky because there is someone here at work who knows how most of the stuff works and I was able to ask them when I started learning.
 
Do you know if it is possible to publish static HTML from plone? I just want to use it to edit pages. Once the pages are published I want them to be totally seperate from the plone system.
 
Plone really doesnt work like that. For the most part everything gets put into the ZODB.
Any particular reason why you'd want to do it that way?

I guess after you made your site you could use a crawler like HTTrack to save the html, images, and CSS.
 
The system I originally built takes user created html, transforms it using xslt to apply all of our visual themes, and spits out some finished html that we serve through apache. This system works really well and apache is rock solid, the only problem is the user interface is a little difficult for our non technical users. We basically want a nicer front end for editing, but ideally we would like to reuse our xslt and publish static html.
 
Plone works quite differently than that so it may not be the best solution for you.

You could try going in through the ftp or dav interfaces and download the objects that way and see if you can do anything nifty with them on your current system.

You could try to add UI niceness to the system you built. Pretty sure kupu is free.

I would just setup a test instance of Plone and try to get a feel for it. The template system is very robust so you should be able to make it look like your existing site. The list of features and functionality is really too long to do a Drink the Koolaid song and dance here, but I'm sure if you read over Plone.org, setup a test site, and play with some products you'll get a better picture of how/if it could integrate into your system. (depending on the products you want to play with, you might want to use 2.1.3 as 2.5.0 was just recently released)


One thing that your description of your system reminded me of was Serena Collage. It's more of just a publishing system. ... The price tag is icky and it's not opensource, but it might lead you to other systems similar to what you've described.
 
Thanks frobozz. I've tried replacing the WYSIWYG editor in HyperContent (our current front end) but it did not very well. I will explore that software you suggested. Thanks to all :D
