I just got a new 716a IDE dvd burner today. Got it from newegg.com arrived 2 days ahead as always. I hook it up and bam locks up windows. Tried everything in the world with there tech support thye said it was my computer. Took it to my friends house and the same thing. Anyone else have problems with these drives??

I had some major problems with my 712SA, just contact Plextor's customer support, they are awesome :) They have had quite a few defective drives recently, both IDE and SATA.

Oops, just noticed you said that you contected support already... I dunno.. Try contacting support again, maybe you will get another representative?

I've only had one drive go bad on me and they actually had a replacement to me in 4-5 days which kind of surprised me. I've never known an optical drive to just lock on windows like that.

Just to rule a few things out:

-Did you use different IDE cables between your computer and your friends computer that you tested on?

-Master/Slave settings? I've occasionaly noticed problems with CS on some drives so you might try both combinations.

yes i used different cables, and i tried running just the plextor and it still locked up, As of today its on its way back to plextor. Has anyone used this thing to back up Dvd's i wanna know how fast it rips

I'm not sure if ripping video off a DVD is similar to just pulling a bunch of data files off one but it takes me about 5 minutes or so to copy an entire dvd to my HDs from what I remember. That's using a 712 and not a 716 but I'd imagine the difference would be minimal.

Same here. I've had no problems with mine (712) and the difference is non-existant for ripping. They both read at 16x. There's no rip-lock on those drives either.

At least Plextor is treating you correctly by replacing the drive. My friend had a via kt333 based board (Asus a7v333??) and he got horrible performance with his 712, but I'm absolutely sure it was a driver problem (he doesnt believe in updating drivers  ) However he migrated that drive to his nf4 ultra based board and I havent heard any complaints. Another friend got a 716 (pata version) and would not read/burn DVD's. 10 minutes with Plextor tech support identified the drive as faulty (dvd "eye" was borked but cd-reads worked fine) and they treated him great too.
