Please suggest to me a video card

Okay, my current [email protected] with a 5870 will probably permanently be demoted to a file server in about 48 hours...

A 5870 is obviously overkill for a file server... (never mind an OCed [email protected]...)

But... I stress that I've used the term "probably"... Who knows if I may decide to dual-boot this machine with XP or something to play old games (that obviously won't require much of a video card, certainly not a 5870...)

Thus, I've stalled at just replacing the 5870 with the absolute cheapest POS video card, as maybe it will end up doing light gaming...

But, the 5870 is too big for shoving HDs into the case, so although I can afford to leave it in there, it's really gotta come out.

(I can afford everything, otherwise I'd just sell the system...)

The case is adequate for a file server, so I'm not considering moving it into another case...

So...

What's the best/suggested video card to throw into it? Definitely prefer single-slot cooling, probably prefer (but not a demand) that it not take any additional power, or just a single 6-pin at most... And keep it short, the 5870's only coming out as it's too long...

Card's I've considered:

MSI R4650-MD1G Radeon HD 4650 1GB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express
$71 shipped, $46 AMIR, ~$25 after selling Metro...
Probably not a bad gaming card (dunno, I've only every bought top models...), but is short and requires no additional power...

MSI N94GT-MD512 GeForce 9400 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express
$49 shipped, $19 AMIR
Cheap in the end, all three video connectors, no extra power, short...
But sucks for games(?) and still has a fan...

MSI N8400GS-TD256 GeForce 8400 GS 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express
$35 shipped, $15 AMIR
Cheapest solution (in the end) available currently on Egg, has three video connectors, no extra power...
Still has a fan, can I still watch movies on this, can it even play Pong?

That's what I've come up with after a week of debating with myself...

Ignoring MIRs (but Metro will sell...), the 4650 and 9400GT are even in price... And basically even when factoring in AMIR...

So, I imagine it's really a toss-up between a 4650 and an 8400 GS?

Anyone suggest a better card?

(I'm willing to even get a better card than a 4650 BTW... Just minimum single 6-pin power and single-slot cooling and has to be short...)

BTW - Gaming res will either be 2560x1600 (if the card can do it, why not?), or 1280x800 (that's pretty low already...), and yes, I'm willing to turn settings down, just want the game to run... I will not game if it's a slideshow...

Thanks for any suggestions/thoughts! Low-end cards is something I typically completely and utterly ignore!

I'm not sure I understand.

You are making you pc a file server and replacing the 5870 with a really cheap card, so you can game on your file server?

What are you going to do with the 5870?

How much are you willing to spend?

I'm currently building an i7-920 system with GTX 480s SLIed.

The ol' E7400 will become probably a dedicated file server. 5870 is overkill, and too big for HDs to fit. Need a shorter card. But who knows if I may again want to game slightly on it, in the event there's something I can't go on Windows 7 64-bit. (ol' XP games, or non-64-bit-encoded Gametap games...)

5870 more than likely will get sold. If a GTX 480 dies and I have to RMA, well, it's an SLI config, I'll survive on one in the meantime...

Single-slot cards with single six-pin max power connectors appear to max around ~$100, so I'm willing to spend $100, I guess.

Just needs to be short. I think a 9800GT might be too long, otherwise a used one's in the FS subforum ~$60 shipped...

Hmmm, not bad, same length as the Zotac for cheaper... (half price AMIR)

Dual-slot cooling, but I just realized I just lose a PCIe x1 slot, so I don't care about losing that...

This review also shows the 9800GT 50% faster than the GT240 I had been consider...

Thanks! I think I will go with this... (I guess I shouldn't have ruled out dual-slot so quickly...)

+1 on the 9800GT, great card for the price.

Yeah, for practically 1/10th the price of some GTX480s, I'm surprised you can buy such a capable card... It's no slouch in benchmarks...

(Keep in mind I don't know low-end...)

Well you do now.... :D

Of course right after I order the 9800GT the above goes to $10 AMIR.

I'm going to buy one anyway and try it.

(Actually, I wouldn't be shocked if I can send in the MIR on the 9800GT, making my OOP expense ~$50 on it, then even sell it for $50+, and not be out any dough, or even make a slight profit...)

I assume the 8400GS is going to consume less idle as well...

(edit:

couldn't quite find an apples-to-apples comparison, but seems the idle of both cards might be close to identical...)

Don't regret the 9800GT, I just know that if I never game again with the system, that even that card's obviously overkill...

Hell, I bet there's a good number of fellow [H]-ers that would consider that card their choice for a gaming card...
