after reading here and being helped with pumping up an older puter and learning quite a lot from you all, i've got the bug to build.

what i do most is digital Photography with a Canon 5D and 30D.......i shoot and convert Raw files, so i want to build a puter that will convert with flaming speed. right now with my Dell 4600i P4 2.8GHz i get a 12-16 second conversion time......not bad, but would like to go as fast as i can get.

i do like playing games as well, not as intense as most here, but i don't want a wimp of a machine either.

about the only thing i will be using from current setup is my 2405 monitor.

so much stuff to choose from, i really can't decide between AMD or Intel, and obviously dual core will be the way to go................please help me get started.

thx

wow :

you kinda got a tuff one here. Sure its easy to rattle off specs for a very decent rig but then a responsible person must add >>>> is the investment going to be worth the increased perfromance actually seen >>>>>>>>>>>> while your P4 >>> 2.8ghz is not the leader of the pack any more >>>> its not in the back of the pack either >>>>> you could easily spend 1800.00 dollars on a spec with all very good name brand top perfromance componets yet only acheive a maybee 2 sec maximum 3 sec improvement on your video conversion.

And please bear in mind; the dual core processors are faster at multi tasking (example if you want to be gaming and video converting at the same time) but a single core processor is goign to be substantially faster if you are single tasking. The dual core is only better when multi tasking.

Please give us an idea where you would like to go from here with more info >>>> others will most likely chime in too with some advice to give you even more info to digest >>>> jsut out of curosity >>>> how much ram are you running now >>>>>> should have at least one gig >>>>>>

I personally would wait one more year >>>> for the next generation OS (64 bit vista) to become stable >>>> then build a machine on that capability >>>> the 64 bit bus is going to hurl us into substantially improved speeds without a doubt !!!

BTW: Intel CPU is the choice if video editing is your main course of duty on the potential machine >>>> hands down

hey thanks, and i think that's what i needed to hear as well............i may be just jumping the gun, and as you say, waiting for the new system a year from now may be the best advice for me.
right now i have 2gigs of Ram installed as Photoshop CS2 is a memory hog.

dollar wise i'm not rich, but i'll buy what will do the job.

thx for advice and education............. ;)

if you're converting RAW files with Photoshop or another multithreaded application, dual core will provide a far more substantial performance gain than 2-3%. I personally think the AMD X2 4400+ is the sweet spot for price/performance at the moment, but thats a subjective sort of thing.

You could get a 4400+ and an asus A8N-E (non sli, nforce4 ultra) for $560 at newegg, or less if you were willing to take a refurb mobo.

I dont want to sound contradictory or argumentative (no troll here) but poster above; please paint the whole picture when speaking of this upgrade that will only cost whatever ????? the original poster will need a new high quality PSU to run the rig you have specified(Dell PSU's are priorietary and will not power that board anyway) >>>>> $100.00 bucks minumum >>>>> my choice PSU for that spec $169.00 now they will also need a new PCI viceo card >>>>> yeah another $200.00 to $400.00 depending how insane you want to go.

the memory can most likely be salvaged from the dell as well as the cd-rom drives and dvd rom drives

but they dell case will need to go >>>>> good high qaulity case worthy of spec referenced >>>> $150.00 ish Antec P150 -160 line

now add up the investment & I will stick by my statement >>>>> the currently available increase in performance would not be worth MY hands going that dep into my pocket >>>> but that could be just me ?????

'the componets spec'ed above by Ianmassey are first class parts >>>> no doubt

but now that we have an accurate cost annalysis >>>>>> you can pick a road to travel
