Hi All,

I'm a new member. :)

As I work on Microsoft technologies, which are server based, I need computing power to practise and learn those systems. as well as the fact that server-virtualisation is worthwhile to learn.

That being said, I've been quoted the following two servers:

Quad Core x3440
16GB Ram
500GB HD
30tb on 1gbps port
IPMI
1 IP
$109/mo with no setup fees

and

Quad AMD 6274 (64 cores, 64 Threads)
128GB Ram
1 x 120GB SSD, 2 x 2TB HDDs SATA 3
30TB on 1gbps port Tier 1 first 30tb free
IPMI
$500

I'm in the UK and it is basically £400 a month.

These servers will be used to run a number of MS technologies which my job revolves around, but I will dedicate a server to WSUS etc and use this as a marketing tool in my career (As I did with IAAS, and enhanced my career). 128GB is a lot of RAM, but I may let friends use some of the resources (i.e. a VM with 4gb RAM etc, for a fee).

The first server listed will run ESXi 5 and vm's which aren't too resource intensive. Ok it's not perfect .e.g it has 1 disk but it won't matter too much. The other server will run Hyper-V 3.

EDIT: I can get static IPs for $1.50 per IP. I am planning to run a mixed environment and therefore setup DHCP too for servers other than AD, DHCP itself, etc. I know the above specs may have bottlenecks but somethin has to give in the cost! Also, I know some guys here provide hosting but you guys are way out of my league!

Any thoughts on this build?

I noticed the majority of you guys are building your own servers to be based at home instead of hosting with a company. Anyone here hosting??

Hi,

I tried that and several other IAAS providers.

Reasons were:

1) Some providers had rates that would charge me $1200 for running 10-12 VMs at 2ghz 1 cpu core, 1gb RAM for half a month's use! Granted, I chose a gigabit network but still. In addition, I have to pay for the windows licenses I use when I have my own ones which I CAN'T use!

2) Another is way too slow with providing WS2012, and I need that now.

3) Lack of console view is a pain (though the host for 1 provided this).

4) Need two NICs per server for some things like Forefront.

5) Switching off the majority of the servers would not teach me how to maintain servers and uptime.

6) The way I'm doing it now, deploying ESXi and Hyper-V, I learn even more commercial skills!

I'm not sure how UK pricing would work, but for testing purposes you can just about use desktop components to build a sub $1000 that would support VMware and/or Server 2012 Hyper-V. Especially going the AMD route. Now, with taxes over there it may be not feasible to do a budget build like what you'll see some folks posting on this forum.
