Hi All,

Could someone help me jog my memory on memory and the X58 boards/i7 memory controller. I have a EVGA X58 vanilla board with a i7 920 @ 4.1ghz. I currently have 6gb of corsair ram at just under 1600mhz and at 7-7-7-24-1t. I want to get 12gb in there to get photoshop to run a bit smoother when working on large files. I cant remember what issues these boards and i7s had with memory and overclocking. Was it that the boards didn't like 6+gb or it didn't like all the slots being filled?
 
OCing Nehalem CPUs. Ah, the good old days.

Nehalem IMCs start feeling very stressed when either all 6 DIMMs are populated and/or when 4GB+ DIMMs are used and/or when 1600mHz+ memory is used. Expect needing to boost the IMC voltage (on Asus boards it was called QPI/DRAM, dunno the EVGA term for it in the BIOS) quite a bit to get it stable from where you are now.
 
With my 920 I had that I was running at 4.2Ghz (200x21), and 3x2GB, and then 3x4GB sets of DDR3-2000 RAM, it required 1.65v to the IMC.

I am pretty sure the IMC on my old chip was really sad from the get go, as my current chip doesn't seem to need near as much voltage for the IMC and higher clocked RAM.

You may have to play with other things as well as the IMC voltage.

Don't count on the RAM being stable at default voltage either.

Can't say for sure on filling all 6 slots at over 1600 as my 2 sets were too different to work properly.

Running at only 1600 should be fairly easy as long as you have a matching set if you want to fill all 6 slots. I would think that if you have a good chip, 1.35 to 1.5v to the IMC should be fine.
