Hello all :)

I just purchased a NF7-S, and a Barton 2600+. I'm not really in to overclocking, but someone recommended that I should at least up the fsb to 200mhz because the processor can usually handle it with no problem at all. I've read of people doing this, and even still using the stock HSF. Providing that I would be able to up the fsb to 200mhz, I would rather use an aftermarket HSF, just to keep temps low. Can someone recommend one that isn't overkill? Remember, I'm just upping the fsb to 200mhz to run 1:1 with some pc3200 ram. Also, someone recommended the Speeze FalconRock, anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance

2600+ runs at 12.5 x 166fsb = 2075mhz

so if you just increase the fsb you will get
12.5 x 200fsb = 2500mhz

you will have to put the multiplier down to 10.5 to give you 2100mhz but you will only be able to do this if your chip is unlocked or if you unlock it yourself

Half-truth. The Barton 2600+ actually runs at 11.5 x 166FSB = 1913MHz.

It is the older Thoroughbred 2600+/333 that runs at 12.5 x 166FSB = 2083MHz.

I had a Barton 2600+ that just happened to not overclock to anything worth crap: It would not even boot at all at FSB settings above 180MHz regardless of CPU voltage, and it would run unstable at any FSB setting above 173MHz. It's definitely the luck of the draw: Sometimes you get a CPU that's a great overclocker using just the FSB overclocking; sometimes you get a CPU that doesn't overclock to anything worth a sh*t (like I did).

Since you recently purchased that Barton it is almost certainly locked unless it is a mobile CPU. That being the case, you may or may not be able to reach 200 FSB using the default multiplier. You would almost certainly be able to if you could lower the multiplier to avoid overclocking the chip farther than it is capable of going. In any case, better cooling can never hurt. Recommendations are difficult to make without a little more information though. Do you move your case around alot, taking it to LAN parties and such? Are you against having to remove the mainboard to install the heatsink using the 4 mounting holes? How much of an issue is fan noise?

Thanks for the replies, fellas.

anr11,

This my first build, and I'm waiting for all the parts to come in before I put anything together. So I will put the HSF on before mounting the mainboard in my case. Also, this system will stay at home. Lastly, I would definitely like something that works well, but is very quiet if at all possible.

well I am currently running my Barton 2600 at 11.5x200. My idle temps are 37 and my full load temp under Prime is 44. I am useing a SLK-900A HS with a 92MM Vantec Tornado Fan.
